The population of Tasmania at the preceding census, taken April 7, 18G1, was 89,977. Comparing the census of 1870 with that of 1861, there was an increase of 9,351 souls, or 10*39 per cent. The difference between the number in the census of 31st March, 1857, and that of 7th April, 1861, was 8,485, or 10*41 per cent., so that the increase of population was only about half as rapid as it was at the date of the previous census. On the 7th February, 1870, the proportion of males to females was 113*72 to 100: on the 7th April, 1861, it was 122*80 to 100.
