The number of inhabited houses at the census of 1891 was 870,578, a^^ainst 914,108 in 1881, ami 961,380 in 1871. The decrease in tlie decennial period 1881-1891 amounted to 4 7 per cent.

Of uninhabited houses, there were 58,257 at the census of 1881, and 69,320 in 1891, representing an increase of 18 9 per cent, in uninhabited liouses ; in 1881 there were 1,710 houses building ; in 1891 there were 2,602.

In Ireland, in 1891, there were only three cities with over 50,000 in- habitants—viz. , Dublin, with 245, 001, but 361, 891 within the metropolitan police district (349,688 in 1881); Belfast, 255,950; Cork, 75,345; Limerick had 37,155 inhabitants ; Londonderry, 33,200 ; Waterford, 20,852.
