The first building was erected in 1806 upon the lot on Chestnut Street above 10th, purchased from John Miller, together with 25 feet frontage in addition purchased from Thomas Leiper, The design is supposed to have been that of Robert Mills, or of Latrobe, the architect of the old Pennsylvania Bank.
