I was very grateful, and confided in his promises. But when Carlisle announced the committees I was astonished to find that Stephenson- now a Senator from Wisconsin- was appointed to the Committee on Public Lands and that I had been assigned to a place on the Committee on Indian Affairs. Sawyer came to me promptly and told me that he could not secure my appointment to Public Lands, but he was sure I would enjoy my work on Indian Affairs.
