THE "ARK" ALPHABET.

[In this Alphabet the child will have to find out the animals named for the letters. Thus some slight acquaintance with Natural History will be gained in conjunction with the Alphabet.]

A stands for the Ark—where all things that had life

God saved with good Noah, his sons, and his wife.

B stands for the Bear—here a brown one you see,

Who's clinging in fear to the bough of a tree.

C for Camel and Cow.—What would poor Baby do,

Dear Cow, if good Noah had not cared for you?

D for Dove, who the olive-branch afterwards bore,

To let Noah see that the Deluge was o'er.

E stands for the Elephant, mighty and strong,

To whom the great trunk, like a hand, does belong.

F stands for the Fox, that the Englishmen chase,

And Fowls, for which Noah was glad to find space.

G stands for Giraffe—who must bend down his head,

If he means by his friends in the Ark to be fed.

H stands for Ham—Noah's son, as you know;

And for Horses, which o'er the turf swiftly can go!

I stands for the Ibex, with elegant horn;

On high Eastern mountains this wild goat was born.

J stands for the Jackal, the lion's good friend;

And for Japheth, who loves the poor cattle to tend.
