IDDINQS, Joseph Paxson, geologist, was born
in Bultiiiuiie, Mil., Jan. 21, 1857 ; son of William
Penn and Ahnira (Gillet) Itldings ; grandson of
Caleb P.'iire and Harriet (Jackson) Iddings, and
of Martin and Eliza (Edwards) Gillet. and a de-
scendant of Ricbard Iddings, of Nantmeal town-
sliip, Cbester county. Pa., wbo died tbere in
17'25 ; also of Tlionias Lloyd, first governor of
IVniisylvania under William Penn (1682) ; of
Jonatiian Gillet, who landed at Nantasket, Mass.,
May 30, 1G30, la the ship Xa)icy and John, and
of Reinold Marvin, who moved from Hartford to
Saybrook, Conn,, in 1639, He was graduated.
Ph.B., engineering course, Sheffield Scientific
scliool, Yale college, in 1877, and was assistant
in field surveying and meclianical draugliting
there. 1S77-78, during which time be pursued a
course in mineralogy and chemistry. He tben
took a special course in geology and assaying at
the School of Mines. Columbia college, 1878-79 ;
worked in microscopical j^etrography at the Uni-
versity of Heidelberg, Germany, 1879-80 ; was
assistant geologist on the U.S. geological survey,
1830-88 ; geologist, 1888-92 ; reinstated, 1895 ; as-
sistant professor of petrology. University of Chi-
cago. 1892-9."), and became full professor in 1895.
He was elected a fellow of the American Asso-
ciation for the Advancement of Science in 1884 ;
foreign correspondent of the Geological Soci-
ety of London ; lionorary fellow of the New York
Academy of Science, and fellow of the Wasbing-
ton Academy of Science and of tbe Geological
Society of America. He is the author of numer-
ous articles published by tbe U.S. geological
survey and in tbe Aynerican Journal of Science,
tbe Bulletin of tbe Philosophical Society of
Washington, Tlie Journal of Geology, and else-
where,
IDE, Fannie Ogden, ("Ruth Ogden"), au- thor, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dec, 27, 1853 ; daughter of Jonathan and Abigail (Murpliey) Ogden ; granddaughter of Curtis and Ruth B. (Swinney) Ogden, ami a descendant of Ricbard Og<len, of Fairfield, Conn., wbo with bis brother John came to America about 1650. She was ed- ucated in the schools of Brooklyn, and in Decem- ber, 1874, was married to Charles W. Ide. She is the author of : A Little Queen of Hearts (1884): His Little Roijal Highness (1889); A Little Loyal Red-Cnnt (1891); Courage (1892): Little Home- spun (1898); Loyal Hearts and True (1899), and Tattine (1899),
IDE, Henry Clay, diplomatist, was born in Barnet. Vt., Sept. 18, 1844; son of Jacob and Lo- daska fKnigbts) Ide ; grandson of Timothy Ide, and a descendant of Nicholas Ide, wbo emi-
grated from England and settled at Rehoboth,
R.I., in 1643. He prepared for college at the St,
Johnsbury academy, and was graduated from
Dartmouth in 1866. He was principal of St.
Johnsbury academy, 1866-68 ; head master of tbe
high school at Ar-
lington, IMass., 1868-
69 ; studied law un-
der Judge H. B.
Steele, of St. Johns-
bury, Vt., 1869-70 ;
was admitted to the
bar in 1870, and began
to practise in St,
Johnsbury in 1871.
He served for three
years as states' attor-
ney for Caledonia
county ; was a mem-
ber of the state senate,
1882-85; president of
the Republican state
convention in 1884, and a delegate to the Repub-
lican national convention in 1888, He was ad-
mitted to practise in tbe U.S. supi'eme court in
1891 ; was U.S. commissioner to Samoa, 1891-93 ;
and chief justice under joint appointment from
England, Germany and the United States. 1893-
97. In February, 1900, he was appointed to
serve on tbe commission to establish civil govern-
ment in the Philippine Islands. He was mar-
ried, Oct. 26, 1871, to Mary M., daughter of Jo-
seph and Sophia l\Ielcher, of Stoughton, Mass.
He was a director of tbe First National bank of
St. Johnsbury, and tbe savings bank at Passump-
sic, Vt. ; the Tredegar National bank of Jack-
sonville, Ala., and of various manufacturing and
railroad corporations. Dartmouth college con-
ferred upon liim the honorary degree of LL.D. in
1900.
lliRIE, Peter, representative, was born in Eastoii, P;i., Feb. 3, 1796 ; son of Peter (1765-1855) and Elizabeth (Kachline) Ibrie. and grandson of Conrad Ibrie, wbo was born in the circle of Fran- conia, Germany, 1731, was married three times, and died in Easton in 1813. Peter Ibrie was grad- uated at Dickinson college in 1815, was admitted to tbe bar, Aug. 20, 1818, and practised bis pro- fession in Easton, Pa. He was a representative in tbe Pennsylvania legislature and in tbe 21.st and 22d congresses, 1829-33. He was brigadier- general of state militia at the time of Andrew Jackson's death, 1845, and became a charter mem- ber of the board of trustees of Lafayette college in 1826, resigning in 1837. He was a director of the Easton bank. He was twice married : first
