The Prayers contained in this volume were composed many years ago, at the request and for the use of my late friend, Mr. Joseph Senior, of Dalton, near Huddersfield.
In common with many others, he lamented that no book of daily prayers for the use of the New Church existed . [With Mr. Mason's “Help to Devotion,” it does not interfere.] Mr. Senior lived to see its completion, and I began to copy it in volumes for his special use. Had he lived, it would have been published at his expense.
It is needful to remark that the prayers were originally double the length of those now contained in this volume. But I have thought it prudent to abbreviate them, so as to bring them within the compass of family reading.
At the request, originally of a lady, and lately of a clergyman of the Church of England, I have added Prayers for Particular Occasions.
The great variety of subjects contained in eight hundred prayers precludes the possibility of preparing an index. But I have added a form of self-examination, and a brief preparation for the reception of the Holy Supper. I have also added a short table of portions of Scripture, drawn from the Psalms and from the Lord's Sermon on the Mount, to be read before the prayers.
I have recently published a little volume entitled the “Prayer of Prayers,”—five short lectures on the Lord's Prayer. This volume I recommend to the subscribers of “The Book of Worship.”
And if any of the subscribers to the present volume are unable to purchase it, I will send it them freely on condition of their sending two stamps to pay the postage. I pray that the Divine blessing may accompany both volumes.
