SABBATH EVENING.

LMIGHTY and beneficent God! we humbly draw near to Thee this evening, and adore Thee for the blessings which we have enjoyed during thie Sabbath. Inspire our hearts with love and our tongues with praise, that we may show forth a spirit of devout gratitude. O may the impressions made upon our hearts during our attendance in the sanctaary of Thy house be permanent, and produce in our lives the fruits of righteousness and peace. Bless the labours of all who minister this day, and who have been engaged in the building up of Thy Church; through their instrumentality may many be turned to righteousness. Let Thy 'Word go forth in the plenitude of its power, aud accomplish the purpose whereanto Thou hast sent it. As Thy Word can only find an entrance into such minds as are prepared to receive it. O let Thy righteous dispensations go forth to the sccomplishment of this necessary preparation, It is Thine to dispel darkness from the understanding, and to prepare it for the discernment of spiritual truth. It is Thine to overcome prejudice by the force and power of truth. It is Thine to quicken the soul by the influence and graces of Thy Holy Spirit. Send forth, then. O Lord, we beseech Thee, this power, and grant that this day's spiritual labour may

add to Thy Church new and faithful members. « O prosper the labours of Thy ministers, for Thy name and mercy's sake,

Thou hast counselled us to labour that we may acquire faith in Thee. Inerease our faith, we beseech Thee, for we are so prone to despond when the slightest difficulty approaches us, that unless assistance from Thee is continually vouchsafed, we become like to them who go down into the pit. Our understandings perceive the faithfulness of Thy word, and again and again have we, amidst darkness and despair, been led to behold the wonder-working power of Thy providence, and yet have we mistrusted Thy aid, and too frequently murmured at the severity of our sufferings as though we were left alone to contend against the virulence of our enemies. Lord, help us to overcome this unbelief; increase our faith, and give to us a more perfect confidence in Thy goodness.

Now, O Lord, as our duties call us again into the world, help us, that in going forth amidst its snares and entanglements, we may not be
