good with it, not from ostentation, but from truly upright and spiritual motives; so shall we act as Thy stewards, making all Thy creatures to rejoice that Thou hast appointed us to dispense Thy benefits.
Preserve us this day, we beseech Thee, in Thy love and fear, and aid us to perform our duties with willing minds and cheerful countenances. These things we ask, O Lord, for Thy own name sake. Amen,

TUESDAY EVENING.
0 LORD God, our Saviour. Thou hast brought us to the close of another day, and the great business of temporal activity is for a time suspended. Fit opportunity for calling to our remembrance the still more important business of eternity. Thou hast reminded us that "the night cometh, in which no man can work." O teach us the true meaning of these important words. May we remember that they refer to the day of preparation for our eternal change. That in this state all the necessary processes of the regeneration must be passed through, that at its conclusion no change can take place in our state, and that "as the tree falls so will it lie." O suffer us not to procrastinate the awful business of eternity. May we consider our first duty is to "seek Thee and Thy righteousness." Silence the anxieties of the natural man, we beseech Thee, by a more steady reliance on Thy providence; may we remember that "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." O assist us to silence the anxious enquiry, of " What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewithal shall we be clothed?" May we trust in Thee and do good, so shall we dwell in the land, and verily we shall be fed. May we seek the one thing needful, and leave every other care to Thy providence.
We commit ourselves, O Lord, to Thy divine protection this night. Guard us from evil, we beseech Thee. Speak graciously to those who are in bitterness of spirit. Visit the widow and fatherless in their affliction, and comfort all the sons and daughters of suffering and disease. These things grant, O Lord, for Thine own name sake. Amen.

WEDNESDAY MORNING.
O LORD Jesus Christ, we pray Thee to strengthen us that our duty may be faithfully performed; aid us, we beseech Thee, to discern the best means of rendering ourselves acceptable in Thy sight. Thy great forerunner upon earth did not only preach repentance, but the necessity of bringing forth fruits meet for repentance. This, then, is our duty—to be fruitful. Thy word bas instructed us, that goodness is never unproductive; it lies not concealed; in the heart of the regenerate it is still increasing, and still sending forth its power to strengthen the weak hands and confirm the feeble knees. Its good works and good instructions are the generative acts which, by going forth, bring new converts into the true Church of the Lord; and we feel. O Lord, that the everlasting gospel is best propagated as we obey Thee, and "let our light so shine before men that they may see our good works," and Thee, our Heavenly Father, glorified therein.
