As prior, consider- ably enlarged Downside Abbey; personally superin- tended the building of the church, without professional aid; member of the Commission on Anghoan Orders, giving valuable aid by his discovery in the Vatican Archives of important papers bearing on the case, 1896; three times summoned to Rome to give his opinion on various matters; awarded a gold medal by Leo XIII; created cardinal 1914.
