Hellenic East to the Western and Latin phenomena of the transition period. These have a personal interest for us, making part of our own past. They have also the interest of that which lived and was to grow in life. Find what interest one may in mediaeval Byzantium,—and it is full of instruction,—still it is a tale of what had reached its zenith, of what was past its best strength, a tale of decadence postponed with skill and energy, and yet only postponed.
