This was corrected in the Introduction to the Pipe Rolls for Cumberland, &c. (1 R47) and in Mr. Hinde's paper on the subject (Arch. Journal xvi, pp. 217, &c.) Mr. Freeman in his Norman Conquest asserts that ' Cumberland now [1092] became an Earldom.' But in his William Rufus (Appendix ou ' Earldom of Carlisle') corrects himself and refers to Mr. Hinde as proving that the Earldom was not of Cumberland but of Carlisle, and was not founded by William Rufus, but by Henry I, Even this, however, is wrong, for, as Mr. Eyton rightly observes (Add'it. MSS. 31,930, fo. 171) Randulf was never ' Earl,' but merely ' Lord' of the district.*' Ex inform. J. Horace Round. () The Castle of Harcla is in Westmorland. Earl of. Somerset (1397); Fitzroy, cr. Uuk« of Richmond, (1525), &c.
