Family estates.— These, in 1883, consisted of 17,730 acres in Cumberland, valued at £lti,S50 a year, 17,780 in Northumberland, at £18,249, and of 13,030 in the North Riding, co. York, at £14,502. Total 7S.540 acres, Talued at £'49,601 a year. Principal Residences.— Castle Howard, near Malton, co. York, and Naworth Castle, near Brampton, Cumberland. ( IL ) His Lordship is distinguished for his genius and acquirements, and is author of a volume of well-known poems " See Sir Egerton Brydges' note in Collins' Peerage, iii, 509. His fame as a Poet and Play-writer rests however chiefly on the notice of him by his young relative, Lord Byron, in the " English Bards and Scotch Reviewers"— " What heterogeneous honours deck the Peer! Lord, Rhymester, I'ctit-Muitre and Pamphleteer ! So dull in youth, so drivelling in his age, His scenes, alone, had damn'd our sinking stage ; But Managers, for once, cried ' Hold, enough,' Nor drugg'd their audience with the tragic stuff; Yet at their judgment let his Lordship laugh, And case his Volumes with eomjeniai Calf." Possessing a "high reputation as a graceful scholar, he was especially distin- guished for his skill in versification, and, in 1821, obtained two of the tjniv. prizes for his poems [i.e.] the Chancellor's prize for Latin, and the Newdegate [prise] for English verse" at Oxford, where, in 1823, he took a first class degree in classics. He was author (1853) of "A diary in Turkish and Creek waters." Although, perhaps, " he did not attain the highest eminence as a Statesman [he] yet played no inconsi- derable part in public life," and, as Lord-Lieut, of Ireland, his "career of popularity [was] almost without example among Viceroys."
