This settlement, however, after long litigation appears to have been set aside and the Barony of Carlyle was found to belong to F.li/.abeth, the heiryfiicni/. In 1730 William Carlyle of Lochartur, was served heir to Michael, Ith Lord Carlyle. as s, and h. of Robert C. of L., who was s. and h. of William C. of L., who was s. anil h. of Michael C, 2d s. and heir male of Michael, Lord Carlyle. The Peerage appears never to have been assumed or claimed by any of the above as heirs mule of the grantee. ( h ) In the public register is a charter to George Douglas, next br. of this Sir James, dat. Feb. 1593/4, of the Baronv of Carh/tr, Sec, in co. Dumfries and Lanark, which he had probably acquired from his said brothtr. ( c ) The Christian name of Lord Carlyle is not mentioned in the " decreet," but he was, doubtless, the mn of Klizabeth, Lady Carlyle, as her grandfather il. in 1595, and her uncle, Michael Carlyle, the h. male, never assumed the Title.
