He was 26 years old at Easter (5 April) 1300. He was sum. to Pari, from 14 Aug. (1302) 36 Ed. Ill to 4 Oct, (1373) 47 Ed. Ill by writs directed "Johanni de Chcrletun dc J'oicys,"(*) whereby, since 1362, the style of his title may (possibly;, as an alternative, be considered as LOUD CHEltLETON DE POWYS. He m. Joan, da. of Ralph (Staffohd), l^_E_A!ii.__oF Ktaudrd, by Margaret, da. and h. of Hugh (Aldley), Eaul of Gloucester. HeTTT.3 July 1374. His wife survived him, but d. before 1397. He in. before March 1392 Alice, da. of Richard (Fitz Ai.an), Eahl of Auundell, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, da. of Richard (BOBOH), Eaul ok Noktiiamiton. He d. s.p. 19 Oct. 1401. His will dat. 1395. V. 1401, J. Edward (Clierletox), Loud Cherletox, or to CHERLBrOB de POWYS, feudal LoitD of Powis, br. and h. aged 30 in 1421. 1401. He was sum. to Pari, from 2 Dee. (1401) 3 Hen. IV to 26 Feb. (1421) 9 Hun. V,( a ) the writs being directed " Chcrlclon, or Charlcton dc Powys." KG. being probably elected in Feb. 1406/7. In 1410 he sustained great loss by the rebellion of Owen Ulemlower. In 1 117 having apprehended John, Lord Oldcastle, then reputed a Heretic, within his territory of Powys, ho received the thanks of Pari. He m. firstly Alianore, Dow. Countess of Marcii, da. of Thomas (Hoi.and), 2nd Eaul of Kent, by Alice, da. of Richard (Fjiz Alan), Eaul of Arundel. She was living 1403. He m. secondly Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Berkeley of Beverstoue, eo. Glouc. He d. s.p.m. 14 March 1 420/1. (•') (' l ; There is proof of his sitting in the rolls of Pari. Nichols) in the " Her. and Gen.," Vol. vi (pp. 97-124), of The Feudal Barons of Powis," by Morris Charles Jones,180S, ail exhaustive and masterly treatise, printed in Vol. i of the " Montgomeryshire collections issued by the Powys Land Club." Mr. Nichols holds strongly against " the crotchets of the Peerage lawyers" (who consider theBarony to be that of " Chcrleton") and contend* the Barony to be that of "Powis." He states (p. Ill) that Powys became an English Barony in 1283, when Owen ap Griffin (the last), Prince of Powis, surrendered his Principality and received back his lauds in free Moroni/, and adds that this Owen, as well as Griffin (his s. and h.) ought in any future edition of the peerage to be given H " English Peers ;" that John de Cherleton should be " the third not the first Baron ;" that Henry Grey should be "the seventh Lord Powis," &c. This, as applied to the territorial Lords of Powis, is doubtless correct, but, unless a peerage Barony by tenure be admitted (as coutended for in the case of "Berkeley "), such numbering does not apply to them "as English Peers" i.e. Peers of Parliament; and, inasmuch as tilth Peerage (only) is the scope of this work, the Editor prefers following " Nicolas " and " Courthope " as to the treatment of this Barony, which, as a, Peerage, must presumably, be considered as originating in the writ of 1313.
