He and his brothers appear to have gone to Ireland with Sir James Fullertou in order to hold a correspondence with the English of that Kingdom and inform his Majesty [King James of Scotland] of the state, condition, and designs of the Irish, in the event of Queen Elizabeth's death. He became a Fellow' of Trin. Coll., Dublin, 1543 ; M.A., 1535. By James I he was made Serjt.-at-Law, and P.C. [L] M.P. for co. Down, 1613 ; one of the Commissioners for the plantation of Longford, ICIP, and iiually in 1(322, raised to tie peerage as above. He m. firstly, Ursula, sister of William, 1st Eaul of Meatu [I.], da. of Edward (Bhabazon), 1st Baron Brabazon ok Abdee [I.], by Mary, da. of Sir Thomas Smith.
