Amicia, da., whose issue became sole heir to, Williain (Fitz Robert), Earl ok Gloucester. He d. Nov. 1217. VII. 1217. 7. Gilbert (de Clare), Earl of Hertford, also 1 Lord of Clare, &c, s. and h., who, about 1225, became, jure malris, Earl ok Gloucester. He d, 25 Oct. 1230, and was bur. at Tewkes- bury. VIII. 1230. S. Richard (de Claiie), Earl of Gloucester and Earl ok Hertford, also Zorrf of Clare, &c, s. and h., O S b. 1222 ; d. 15 July 1262, and was bur. at Tewkesbury. IX. 1262. 0. Gilbert (de Clake), Earl of Gloucester > | fj and Earl OF Hertford, also Lord of Clare, &c, s. and h., b. 1243. He m. 2 May 1290 the Lady Joan Plantage.net, (" Joan of a"3 Acres") da. of King Edward I. He d. 7 Dec. 1295, and was bur. at Tewkesbury, but his widow was bur. 1307 at Clare Priory. X. 1295. 10. Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Clare, &c, aged 4 years at his Father's death, who, in 1307, on the death of his mother (whose second husband had been sum. as Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, 1299 to 1306), became Earl of Gloucester and Earl of Hertford. He d. unm., being slain at Bannockbum 21 June 1314. XI. 1314. 11. Elizabeth de Burgh, widow, sua jure, Lady of Clare, &c, 3rd sister and coheir of the above named Earl, inherited the Lordship of Clare, &c, as her portion of the vast estates of her brother. She in, the reign of Stephen' (iii, 125). This argument however, is hasod upon their Lordships having confused the Earl Geoffrey (of Essex) of 1213, with the Earl Geoffrey of 1141." Ex inform. J. They were afterwards called imaginary and false Earls, and Henry II, at the beginning of his reign, 'deposuit quosdain imaginarios et Pseudo Comites (says the author of a Chronicle of Normandy) quibus Rex Stephanus omnia pene ad fiscuui pertincutia minus caute distribuerat.' "
