Henry (Clifford), Lord Clifford, s. and h. of t ik.'ik Henry, Lord Clikeord ("the Shepherd Lord") by his 1st wife, Ann, da. of Sir John St. John of Bletso, Beds, was b. 1493, K.B., 23 June 1509, at the coronation of Henry VIII ; is said to have lived a wild and dissolute life in liis youth, whereby he was on bad terms with his Father ; was Sheriff of co. York, 1522 ; sue. his Father in the Peerage and as Hereditary Sheriff of Westmorland, 23 April 1523, and shortly afterwards was, as " Henry Clyfford, Knt., Lord Clyfford, Westmoreland and Vcscy,"( b ) on 18 June 1525, cr. KARL OK CUMBKK- LAND.^) He subscribed the letter to the Pope praying him to sanction the King's divorce from Catharine of Aragon, and was rewarded by large grants of divers monastic lands in Yorkshire, the Priory of Bolton in Craven (1511), &c. In 1530 he held bravely his castle of Skipton during Aske's rebellion. He was Warden of the West Marches, Ca]rt. of Carlisle, Steward of Knaresborough, Steward of Penrith, &C el. K.G., 23 April, inst. 13 May 1537. He m. firstly Margaret, da. of George (Talbot), 4th Karl ok Shrewsbury, by Ann, da. of William (Hastings), Lord Hastings. She o!. s.p. soon after marriage and was bur. at Skipton. He m. secondly, about 1516, Margaret, 1st da. of Henry (Perci), 5th Karl of Northumberland, by Catharine, da. and coheir of Sir Robert Spencer. He d. 22 Sep. 1542, the value of his estates at that time not exceeding £1720 a year. His widow d, 1544 ; both were bur. at Skipton. II. 1542. 2 Henry (Clifford) Earl of Cumberland, &c., e. and h. by 2nd wife, aged 25 at his father's death, K.B., 30 May 1523, at the coronation of Anne Boleyn ; Bearer of the third sword at the coronation of Queen Mary, 1 Oct. 1553. ( c ) " This nobleman was advanced in dignity on the occasion of the creation of the ICing's natural son, Henry Fitzroy, to be Duke of Richmond : the King at the same time made one Marquess (Exeter) ; three Karls (Rutland, Cumberland, and Lincoln); and two Viscounts (Fitz- Walter and Rochford). An ancient MS. in the College of Arms (Collect. Vine. 31) says, ' These were advanced uppon y° joyefull newea of y° Emperours victorie at Pavie in Italy where the K. of Krance was taken prisoner and Richard de la Pole the King's dreaded enemy was slaine a little before A° 1525.' The Signed Bill for the creation of the Earldom of Cumberland is remaining amongst the Records at the Rolls, but without a Recepi, and there is no enrolment of the Patent ; it might, therefore, have been concluded that no Patent had passed the seal, had there not been a full account of the creation of these Peers remaining in the College of Arms (2nd M. 16, p. 08), in which it is stated that ' all their patentes were pre- sented to the Kinges personne by Sir Thomas Wriothesley Garticr Principall Kyng of Armes.' He is described in the Signed Bill as Sir Henry Clifford, luit, Lord Clifford, Westmoreland, and Vesey. " See " Courthope. ' '
