[S.] In 1120 lie, with 7,000 Scotch, went to France to support Charles VII, and after the battle of Beauge, 22 March 1421, where he greatly distinguished himself, was made Constable of France. He m., in 141:1, Elizabeth, da. of Archibald (Douglas), Karl of Douglas [S.], by Lady Margaret Stewart, da. of King ROBERT III. [S.] Herf. s.p.m. being (as well as his wife's father) slain at the battle of Verneuil, in Xormandy, against the English, 17 Aug. 1421. His widow »i. He was living 1431. XIII. 1109. 1. Sir James Stewart (called " lbaviij Jamas") 2d s. of Sir James S. of Lorn [ " the Itlnck Knii/ht of Lorn ") by Jane, Queen Dowager of Scotland, da. of John ( Beaufort), Earl of Somerset, was, in 1469 (being uncle to James 111. [S.L to whose Father he was uterine brother), cr. EARL OF BUCHAN and LOH DA1"< *l lTERHorsE[S.]havingseisin thereof 28 Oct. 1176. He was High Chamberlain [8, J, 1471-73, and again to 148-1 ; Ambassador to France, 1473 ; War- den of the East Marches, 1479. He m. before 4 March 1466, Margaret, da. and h. of Sir Alexander Ooilyy, of Auehterhouse. with whom he acquired the heritable Sheriffdom of co. Forfar. He il. between Jany. 1 192/3 and Feb. 1499/1500.( c ) XIV 1495 ? Alexander (Stewart), Earl of Buchan, &c. [S.], s. and h. He m. firstly, before 20 May 1491, Isabel OfiiLvy, who was then living. He m. secondly before 1499 Margaret, da. of William (de Ruthven), 1st Lord Ruthven [S.] by his 1st wife Isabel, da. off—] Livington. He d. 1505. His widow in. John EBSK2KE, of Dim and was liviug 30 Aug. 1508. XV. 1505. 8. John (Stewart), Eahl of Buchan, &c. [S.], s. and h. by 2d wife, served b. on 29 Aug. 1519. On 26 Jany. 1527/8 he grants a charter to his grandfather, Lord Ruthven. On 4 Aug. 1M7 he resigns all his estates, Lordships, &c, in favour of John, his 1st s., reserving his own life rent. He m. Margaret, da. of James Scrymgeour of Dudhope, Constable of Dundee. He was liviug 14 July 1551. (*) This grant is described as in existence in 1730, but is, apparently, no longer extant. In the papers in the Lovat case (before the Court of Session in 1730) it is said to be in exlenso in the " Leigh Parliament House " and its date and tenor are given at length. The documents in that place of deposit were afterwards removed to the General Register House, but this charter is not among them and seems to have disappeared before 1770. There is, however, little or no reason to doubt its tenor. Ex inform CI. Burnett, Lyon. () His name appears in the Exchequer accounts after the return to Scotland of •fames I.
