His widow was one of the ladies for whom robes of tin- Order of the Garter were prepared, firstly in 1890 as "The Lady Fitzwalter," mid secondly in 1400 (after her re- marriage), as the " Lad; of Rurnell."(°) The family of RatdiU'o, soutetifttfl [since 1485] Lords Fitz Walter and afterwards [1629] Karls of Essex', assumed (among other assumptions) the style of BAKOX BUKXKLL, in right of representing one of the eoheirs( rt ) of that Barony. See " Antiq. Repertory," III, 175. This assumption was apparently not continued by the heir gen. {i.e., the h. to the Barony of Fitz Walter) after the death, s.p, of the 5th Earl of Sussex in 1629. (JitOMWELL (grandfather of the Protector Cromwell) was b. 1602, me. his Father '22 Jany. 1611; M.P. for Wallingford, in 3 pari*., 1627-53, and joining himself to the parliamentary party, signed the Protestation in 1641; took the covenant in 1647: was ou the committee for levying tines on estates of "delinquents," and, in 164S, was a Protestor against any agreement with the King. In 1654 and Hioa was M.P. for Berks in the Protector's pari.; was Gov. of WaUingford Castle 1655, and is said to have been, 26 April 1(158 (the same date hereafter mentioned) a: a Baronet by the said Protector. By him, under patent,( f ) dat. 26 April 1658 (in which he is designed as " Edmund Bunch, Es</uire,") he was cr BARON BOBrJELL OF EAST WITTENHAM, Berks, («) to him and the heirs ( a ) There is proof of his sitting in the Bolls of Pari. It is sealed with these arms, vii, Quarterly, 1st and 4th, the cross of St. Geurge; 2nd, the cross of St. Andrew; 3rd, the Irish harp— over all on an escutcheon of pretence A lion rampant [the arms of Cromwell] the whole representing the arms of the Commonwealth. In the border round the patent, among other devices, is, at the top, the same quarterly coat, but without the escutcheon; while, on the dexter side, are the arms of Cromwell, and, ou the sinister side, a shield of 6 quarterings, viz. Cromwell and S others.
