LORD DINGWALL, of co. Ross [8.1 to him and his heirs and assigns whatsoever. The King likewise secured him, in 1014, a splendid marriage, fir., one with Elizabeth, widow of Theobald (RutlkiO, Viscount BuTLBB of Tui.LEOrHEUM [I.] (who (/. s.p. Jany. 101".), only da. of Thomas (Buti.kb), K.iU, ok Ossohy and ObUOKSI [I.], by his 2d wife, Elizabeth, da. of John (Sheffield), Babon SHEFFIELD. The Earl, her father, who d. that same year (1011). settled nearly all his lands on his heir male, who refused to part with them to this Lord Dingwall (tho' a person in high favour with the King) and was consequently kept a prisoner in the Fleet for so refusing, till the King's death ill 1628. By the influence of the all powerful George Villiers, then Marquess of Buckingham (to whose nephew his da. and h. presumptive, then aged S. was then afliancid) he was cr. 19 July 101'.), B.VRON DUNMOBE, co. Kilkenny und EARL UE DESMOND, [L](") which Earldom was subsequently (with other titles) granted in rcrcrsion, failing heirs male of his body, 7 Nov. 1022, to the Hon. George Eeilding, his doigvatcd son in law (as abovementioned) who, consequently, tho' never so married, obtained it. His wife d. in Wales (18 days biforc him) 10 Oct. 102S and was bur. (possibly re-iuterred) as "Countess of Desmond" 17 March 102S/9 at Westm. Abbey. He d, s.p.in. 28 Oct. 1028, being drowned betwixt Dublin and Holyhead. On his death the Barony of Dunmorc and the Earldom of Desmond, [I.] as conferred in 1019, became extinct (tho' the reversion of the latter, as by the grant of 1022, descended to George, 1st Viscount Call-in, [1.1 formerly George Eeilding,) but the right to the Scotch Barony devolved, as under : — IIP 1C2S. 2. [I.], but never assumed tint title, which was then (erroneously) considered as subject to the attainder of 1715, which (in reality) affected only the English and Scotch dignities.
