Sir Thomas Ebskinb of Gogar, having assisted in rescuing the King from the plot of the Earl of Gowrie (next above- named), and having himself slain, 5 Aug. 1G00, Alexander Kuthven, ft. br. of that Earl, received, in reward, a third part of the Lordship of Dirletoun, co. Berwick (forfeited by the said Earl), and was, about 1002, cr. LORD DIRLETOUN [S.], being placed, as such, in the decree of ranking (1000) next below Lord Loudoun [cr. 30 June ItiOl] and next above Lord Kinloss and Lord Abercorn, which hist was cr, 5 April 1003. He was. as " Thomas Erskine, Lord Dirletoun," cr. IS March 1000, VISCOUNT OP FENTOUN [8J, and on 12 March 1019, was cr. EAKL OF KELLIE [S.] See that dignity. (") She is however spoken of but as a coheir (" (ilia seniore ac una heredum quondam noliilis domini Patricii, domini da Dirleton, Halyburton et Lambden ") in a charter of 1520. Of her two yr. sisters, Mariota Itt. before 1535 George (Home,) 4th Lord Home, [S.] and was living his widow 1502 ; and Margaret, IK. George Ker, of Faudonside. ( b ) These honours were the Earldom of Gowrie and the Barony of Kuthven (the former certainly and the latter probably descendible to heirs male) and the Barony of Dirletoun [S.], which was descendible (ifr ightly possessed by the Ruthven family) to the heir general. This heir was successively the two surviving yr. brothers of the Earl, of whom William d. abroad and unm., and Patrick (the youngest) was living and styling himself " Lord Ruthven " in 1050 and 1007. Mary, only da. and h. of this Patrick, m. Sir Anthony Vandyke, the famous Painter, by whom she had an only da. and h., Justiua, who m. Sir John Stepney, Bai t. Their great-grandson and heir, Sir Thomas Stepney, Bart, (who issue male failed in 1825) left 2 (laughters, of whom the younger m. Andrew Cowell (being ancestress of the Cowell-Stepuey, Barts.), while the elder, Elizabcth-Bridgetta (who d. 17711), m. Joseph Gulston, of Kuutsford Hall, co. North, auipton (who d. 1780), and had Joseph Gulston, s. and h., d. 1790, leaving Joseph Gulston, his s. and h., d. 1841, leaving Alan James Gulston of Derwydd and Knuston Hall, his s. and h., " who, but for the Act of Attainder [1000] would be entitled to the dignity of Lord Dirleton, in case the evidence be sufficient to establish that the honour was granted to the first Peer and the heirs of his body."
