(by his step-father, Edward IV.), 14 Aug. 1471, EARL OF HUNTINGDON, which title he shortly afterwards( a ) resigned( b ) to the King, and was as " Lord Thomas Grey" made K.B., IS April 1475, and cr. MARQUESSt 0 ) OF DORSET 11 the same day, after dynner, and so dyned in his habitte/'C 1 ) This creation was effected "per cincturam f/ladii el capo: Honoris impositioncm." The date, however, of this creation is sometimes given as 30 May 1475. K.G-., 1475/6 ; Constable of the Tower to Edward V. He appears to have been present at the Corona- tion of Richard III., 14 July 14S3. but only under the style of Lord Ferrers de Groby.{ c ) Attainted Jan. 14S3/4, escaping to iiritanny, restored by Henry VII., Nov. 1485. ( f ) He was iu command against the French to assist the Emperor Maximilian, as also against the rebeis at Blaekheath. He m.(E) before 23 April 1475, Cicely (aged 13 and uum. in 1374) suo jure Baroness HaROTOTON and Baroness Bonvillf., da. and h. of William (Bonyille), Lord Harinoton, by Catherine, da. of Richard (Neviu,), Earl of Salisbury. He d. 26 April 1501, and was bur. at Astley, co. Warwick. Will dat. 30 Aug. 1501. His widow m. (as his 2d wife) Henry Stafford), Earl of Wiltshire, who d. 6 March 1522/3. She d. before 2 June 1530, and was bur. at Astley afsd. Will, in which she ignores her second husband, styling herself " Mar- quess of Dorset, Lady Haryngton and Bouvyll," dat. 6 May 1527 ; pr. 5 Nov. 1530. V. 1501. 2. Thomas (Grey), Marquess of Dorset, and Lord Ferrers de Orobv, s. and h., b. 22 June 1477 ; K.B., being then styled Lord Harington, (jarc matris tho' his mother was still living), 31 Oct. 1494. He was sum. to Pari , 17 Oct. 1509, by writ directed " Thomas Grey, Domino Ferrers de Groby," but in the pari, of 1511 by writ directed " Thomrc Grey, Marchioni Dorset." He was Lieut. Gen. of the Army sent to Spain 1512 ; was one of the 8 Challengers at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, June 1520 ; P.O. 1520 ; Gent of the Privy Chamber, 1523; Lord Warden of the Scotch Marches, and Ch. Justice in Eyre, south of Trent, 1523. He promoted the Kings divorce, as also the impeachment of Cardinal Wolsey. On the death of his mother, he sue. her as Lord Harington and Bonville. He m. before 1510, Margaret, widow of William Medley, da. of Sir Robert Wott<>.v, of Bocton Malherbe, co. Kent, bv Ann, da. of Sir Henry Belknap. He ci. 10 Oct. 1530. Will dat. 2 Dec. 1530, pr. 18 Nov. 1531. His wife is mentioned in his will. a ) The Earldom of Huntingdon was conferred, 4 July 1479, on William Herbert iu consideration of his surrender of the Earldom of Pembroke, which had been granted to bis Father by a charter of 8 Sep. 146S. See " Creations 1483 to 1646 " in ap. 47th Rep. D.K.T. Records, sub. 27 May 1434 being the confirmation of the said charter of 1468 of the Earldom of Huntingdon. () As to this resignation the following note is given by Sir N. Harris Nicolas : — " The word resigned is here used, notwithstanding that the Editor [Sir N. H. Nicolas] is well aware of the resolutions of the House of Peers, 1 Feb. 1640, and 18 June 1678, that no surrender of a Patent can be a bar to a claim of the dignity so surrendered ; but at the period in question such surrenders were not uncommon, aud it is presumed that the expression is correct when applied to a transaction which took place nearly two hundred and fifty years before such was determined to be tho law on the subject by the House of Lords." (s) He is sometimes said to have m., firstly, the Lady Ann IToland, only child of Henry, Duke of Exeter, by Ann, sister of Edward IV. This voung lady, however, probably died in infancy.
