His widow, who had the life rent of the Lordship of Galloway, was living as late 20 Jany. 1449/50, but d. before Sep. 1456, and was bur. at Liucludeu Church. M.I. V. 1424. 5. AnCHIBALD(D0UGLAS),EARL01-'D0UGLA.s[S]aIs0DuKE OF ToUkaink, in France, Lord of Galloway, Wigton, Annandale, kc, only surv. s. and h., b. about 1300; and called Earl ok Wiotoun [S.], as early as 1410 ; accompanied the Scotch in 1420 into France, and fought at the battle of Bauge, 142]. He was in his Father's lifetime (under the name of Sort of Wigton), a: by Charles VII, King of France, COUNT OF LONGUEVILLE, in Normandy, receiving the territory thereof. He was one of the Ambassadors to England for the ransom of James I [S.], in 1 124, on whose death, in 1427, he was one of the Regents of the Kingdom, and next year, 1438, Lieut.-Gen. ok the Kinudom, summoning, as such, a Pari, for Nov. 1438. Hem. (probably in 1424) before 26 April 1425,( b ) Euphemia, da. of Euphemia, suo jure Countess ok Strathern [S.] by Sir Patrick Graham. He d. of a fever, 26 June 1439. at Itestaerig, and was bur. at St. Bride's, Douglas M.I.( C ) His widow jn. (dispensation March 1140) as his first wife James (Hamilton), 1st Lord Hamilton [S.J who d. 19 Nov. 1479. She d. between Nov, 1468 and May 1469, when the Lordship of Bothwell, which had beeu settled on her in 1425, fell to the Crown. VI. 1439. G. William (Douglas), Earl of Douglas [S.], also Duke of Touraine and Count ok Lonoueville in France, a. and !>., aged but 14 when he sue. his Father. His power, greater than that of any other sub- ject, tempted him to defy the government, and he and his only br. (David Douglas) were, after a brief trial, convicted of high treason and beheailcd within Edinburgh Castle 24 Nov. 1440. He d. s.p. tho' married (or possibly only affianced) to Janet (), da. of Douglas in 1296-7 ; see Calendar, vol. ii, No. 909," and that as tho Douglas race came not improbably originally from the province of Moray, " hence possibly the stars which are used by many of those northern families." ( a ) Of his daughters, the Lady Marjory m. Feb. 1400, at Bothwell Church, David (Stewart), Duke of Rothsay, jPrince of Scotland, who d. s.p. and v.p. 27 March 1402. ( b ) He is generally credited with a previous wife, viz., Matilda, da. of David (Lindsay), 1st Earl of Crawford [S.], but this has been disproved. See Preface to " Exchequer Soils." [S.] vol. vii, (1884). ( c ) The date of 1438 on his M.I. is, apparently, an error. He is called therein, " Duke of Touraine, Earl of Douglas and Longuevillo, Lord of Galloway, Wigtown and Annandale," &c. ( d ) There is a great confusion in tho Exchequer Rolls [S.] as to this Lady, who in 1465 and 1469 is called therein " Margaret Lyudesay, Countess of Douglas ; " in 1472 "Janet, widow of William, Earl of Douglas," and in 1477 "Margaret Lindsay, formerly Countess of Douglas." Mr. Burnett, Lyon King of Arms, in his able preface to vol vii of these Rolls (p. lxiii) shews conclusively that all these refer to the same Lady, viz., to Janet, widow of William, 6th Earl of Douglas, da. of the second Earl of Crawford [S.]
