(which Robert was only b. of Dives Downes, Bishop of Cork and Ross, 1099-1709) was b. 1751 at Donuybrook castle, B.A., Dublin Univ., 1773 ; Barrister, King's Inns, June 1776 ; P.C. and one of the Justices of the King's Bench [I.] March 1792 ; Ch. Justice, Sep. 1803 till his resignation in Feb. 1822 (with a pension of £3,800 a year) in which year, 10 Dec. 1822, he was cr. BARON DOWNES OF AGHANV1LLE, in King's County [I], with a spec, rem., failing heirs male of his body, to hia cousin Lieut. Col. Sir Ulysses Burgh. In 1806 he was Vice-Chancellor of the Univ. of Dublin, receiving the ban. degree therefrom of LL.D. He d. unm. 3 March IS26, in his 75th year at Merville, Stillorgan Road, in Taney, co. Dublin. He was only s. of Thomas Buuoh, by Anne,da. of David Aicoin, which Thomas was 2nd, but eventually (1S08) 1st surv. s. and h. of Thomas Burgh, of Bert, co. Kildare, by Anne, sister of Robert Downes, and aunt of William, 1st Baron Downes [I.], both abovenamed. He was b. in Dubin 15 Aug. 178S ; sue. his Father, June 1M0. His military career was one of distinction, receiving a cross and clasp for Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nivc, and Toulouse ; being wounded at Talavera, &C. He was Surveyor Gen. of the ordnance 1S20— 27 ; Col. of the 29th Foot, 1S50, and a General in the Arm}-, 1851. K.C B. 1815; G.C.B. 1S60 ; Knight of the lower and Sword of Portugal, Knight of St. Anne of Russia ; Rep. Peek [I] 1833 — 63. In 1818 he was authorised to take the name of de Burgh, in lieu of Burgh. He m. firstly, 20 June 1815, Maria, only da. and h. of Walter Bagenal. She, who was b. 15 Sep. 1792, d. 21 Aug. 1812, in her 50th year. He m. secondly, 4 Aug. 1816, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Christopheria, widow of John- Willis Fleming, of Stoneham, Hants, da. of James Buchanan, of that Ilk. She d. at 19, Grafton street, Midx, IS Oct. I860, aged 61. Hoci.s.p.ni. at Bert House, near Athy, co. Kildare, 26 July 1S63, in his 75th year, when the peerage became extinct. DOWNSHIRE. Marquessate [I.] l. Wills (Hill), Viscount Hillsborough and I. 1789. Baron Hill or Kilwarlin, both co. Down [L], 2d but only surv. s. and h. of Trevor, 1st Viscount and Baron (so cr. 21 Aug. 1717), by Mary, 1st da. and coheir of Anthony Howe, of Muswell Hill, Midx., was b. 30 May 1718, at Fairford, co. Glouc, (Gen. Sir Charles Wills, being one of his sponsors), was M.P. for Warwick, 1741-56 ; sue. his father, 5 May 1742, in the Viscouutcy and Barony abovenamed, taking his seat in the House of Lords [I.], 11 Nov. 1743 ; Lord Lieut of co. Down, 1742 ; P.C. [I.], 1746 ; was, 3 Oct. 1751, cr. VISCOUNT KILWARLIN and EARL OF HILLSBOROUGH, both co. Down [I.], with a spec, rem., failing heirs male of his body, to his undo Arthur Hill, and took his seat as such the 8th inst. ; P.C, 1754 ; Comptroller of the Household, 1751-55 ; Treasurer of the Chamber, 1755. He obtained next year a seat in the House of Lords [G.B.], being cr. 17 Nov. 1756, LORD HARWICH, BARON OF HARWICH, co. Essex. President of the Board of Trade, 1763-65, and again Aug. to Dec. 1766 and 1768-72.
