His widow d. 28 March 1865, in her 92nd year at Glenghana, in Bangor, co. Down. III. 1836. S. Hans (Blackwood), Baron Dufferin and Clane- boye, &c. [I.], next surv. br. and h., 4. Oct. 1758. He m. firstly, 19 June 1784, Mehetabcl-Hester, 2nd da. and coheir of Robert Temi>le of Fen Hills, Boston, in America, by Harriet, 4th da. of Lieut Gen. William Shirley. She d. 7 Feb. 1798. He m. secondly, 8 July 1801, Elizabeth, 1st da. and coheir of William- Henry Fejlay, of Gennetts, co. Meath. He d. 18 Nov. 1839, aged 81, at Ballyleidy House, co. Down. His widow d. July 1843. Helen-Selina, 1st da. of Thomas Sheridan, by Caroline-Henrietta, da. of Col. James Cali.andar, of Craigforth, co. Stirling. He d. on board ship off Belfast, 2] July 1841, aged 47. Will pr. Sep. 1841. His widow m. 13 Oct. 1862, at Dufferin Lodge, Highgate, Midx., George Hay, styled Earl of Gifford (s. and h. ap. of the Marquess ok Tivebddale [S.]), who d. there shortly afterwards, 22 Dec. 1862, aged 40, after a painful illness of 16 months. She herself d. there 13 June 1867, aged about 62 ( c ). («) This was one of 26 peerages conferred on commoners in that year (1800) being the last year before the Irish Union. See vol. i, p. 166, note "a," sub " Ashtown." ( b ) He was s. of Hans Stevenson by Ann, da. and eventually sole h. of James Hamilton of NeilBbrook, co. Antrim, who was nephew of (his issue becoming heir to) James Hamilton, cr. Viscount Claneboye [I.J in 1622, hence the title of Claneboye was added to that of Dufferin ; tho' why this double-barrelled title was again doubled by the addition " of Ballyleidy and KiUyleayK " is not so clear. The length of a title, however (whatever it may add to its dignity) adds nothing to the expense thereof. (°) She was an authoress of considerable power and was perhaps the cleverest and most witty of three sisters well known for beauty and accomplishments in the world of fashion. Of the other two (1) the well known poetess, the Hon. Caroline Norton, mother of the 4th Baron Grantley, (she m. secondly, three months before her death, Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, Bart.) d. 15 June 1877. aged about 68 ; (2) Jane, Duchess of Somerset [the Queen of Beauty at the Eglinton tournament) d. 14 Dec, 1884, aged about 74.
