York [U.K.] He was s. and h. of Sir John Tottenham, Bart. [I.], (so cr. 2d. Dec. 1780), by Elizabeth, sister and coheir of Henry (Loftus), last Earl op Ely [I.], yst. da. of Nicholas (IV th) 1st Viscount Loftus op Ely [[.], both abovenamed. He was 6. 23 Jan. 1738 ; was M.P. for New Ross, 1761-68 ; for Bannow, 1768-76 ; for Fethard, 1776-83, and for co. Wexford, 1783-85, during which period he tuc. to the estate in cos. Wexford and Fermanagh of his maternal uncle, the Earl of Ely abovenamed, and assumed tho name of Loftus in heir of Tottenham, being on 28 June 1785, cr. BARON LOFTUS OF LOFTUS HALL, co. Wexford [1J He sue. his father as 2d Baronet [I.], 29 Dec. 1786. Within six years of his having been first [1785] ennobled he obtained a Marquessate, having received, in that short space of time, no less than five separate peerage creations.! 1 ") He was P.O. [I.] ; Gov. of Wexford ; joint Postmaster Gen. [LI 17S9-1306 ; K.P., 12 Dec. 1794, being installed 11 Aug. 1800. He m. 23 June 1706, Jane 1st, da. and coheir of Robert Myhill,( c ) of Killarney, co. Kilkenny, by Mary, da of William Bilunqsley, of Three Castles in that county. He d. 22 March 1S06, aged 68, in Hume street, Dublin. Will pr. 1806. His widow d. at Bath, co. [I.], also Baron Loftus [U.K.], 1st s. aud h., b. 15 Feb. 1770 ; styled Viscount Loftus, 1794-1800. M.P. for co. Wexford, 1790 - 1800, and again [U.K.], 1802-06 ; Gov. of co. Wexford ; P.O. [I.] ; Postmaster Gen. and Teller of the Exchequer [I.], K.P., 3 Nov. 1807, being installed 29 June 1809 ; cr. D.C.L., of Oxford, 3 July 1810. He m. 22 May 1810, Anna Maria, da. of Sir Henry Watkin Dashwood, 3d Bart., of Kirtlington, Oxon, by Mary Helen, da. of John Graham, member of Council in Bengal. He d. 26 Sep. 1845, aged 75. Will pr. Feb. 1846. His widow was 6. 1785 ; was one of the Maids of Honour to Queen Charlotte, and subsequently o lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Adelaide ; d 6 Sep. 1857 (a few mouths after her son), aged 72, at Hampton Court Palace, Midx. (for a few months) for Woodstock, 1845. He m. 29 Oct. 1844, at St. Geo. Han. Sq., Jane, da. of James Joseph HorE-VEKE, of Craigie, by Elizabeth da. of George (Hay), 7th Marquess of Tweedale [S.] He d. 15 July 1857, aged 43, in Eaton Square, Midx. Will pr. (") This was one of the 4 Marqucssates, which, with 14 other Irish peerages, were cr. this day, being the laBt batch of creations, made before the Union. See vol. i, p. 208, note " c," sub "Avonmore." ( b ) "Prends moi tel que jc suis," was the motto of the Marquess, and inasmuch as it related to one, whoso names was Tottenham, in 1770, Loftus in 17S3, who was made a Baron in 1785, n Viscount in 1789, an Marl in 1791 and a Marquess in 1800, it was perhaps not inappropriate.
