I., being I. 1299, then aged 30, was^) sum. to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 Jan. to (1296/7), 25 Ed. I.,( b ) and was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LOKD 1322. ENGAINE), by writs from 6 Feb. (1298/9), 27 Ed. I, to 15 May (1321), 14 Ed. II. He served in the Scotch wars, and was one of the Barons who subscribed in 1301 the letter to the Pope, his signature thereto being as "Johannes Engayn, Dominws dc Columb."{°) He d. s.p. (1322-23), 16 Ed. II., when the Barony became extinct. II. 1342. 1. John ENGAiNE,nephewandh.,beings.andh.of Nicholas E., by Amicia, da. of Walter Fauconbero, which Nicholas was next br. to the last Lord. He proved his ago in 1323, at his Uncle's death, and was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LOUD ENGAINE), by writs from 25 Feb. (1341/2), 16 Ed III. to 20 Nov. (1360), 34 Ed. III. tho' this last summons must apparently bo a mistake as he d. in Feb. 1357/8,(' 1 ) at Dillington, co. Huntingdon, having m. Joane, da. of Sir Robert Pbverbll. (*) " This Writ may have been addressed to his father, for on 30 Dee. preceding, the son received a command to attend the marriage of the Princess Elizabeth, in which he is described as John de E. jun. (°) Query Colne-Engaine, co. Essex, which was one of the many manors belonging to tho last Lord and possibly to this one. ( cl ) His Inq. post mortem states that ho " died on Wednesday next after the Feast of St. Valentine 135S, so that the Bummoua of 20 Nov. 1360 is probably a mistake ; Sir John Engaine, his eldest Bon, d., v. v., so that Thomas, the 2d sou, became h. to his father."
