Soon after the death (1435) of Alexander, husband of Isabel, suo jure Countess of Mar [S.] (to which Alexander and his heirs by her, that Earldom^) had been resigned) Lord Erskine, was, in 1438, served heir to the said Countess Isabel, and assumed the title of EARL OP MAR [S.] He appears to have m. soon after 20 Deo. 1400( c ) a da. of David (Lindsay), lit Earl op Crawford TS 1 He d. 1453. 1 ' J II. 1453. 2. Thomas (Erskine), Lord Erskine [8.], only s. and h., styled himself (like his father), Earl ok Mar fS], By, however, an assize of error, 15 May, confirmed by Pari. 5 Nov. 1457, the Earldom of Mar^) was declared to have devolved on the crown, on the death of Earl Alexander in 1435, and the service of Lord Erskine in 1438 as lieu- to the Countess Isabel was reduced. He had charter of the lands of Dalnotter in Lennox, 5 Jan. 1458/9, as Lord Erskine, and, as such, sat in Pari. [S.], 14 Oct. 1467. He took the part of King James III. PS.! iu the insurrection of 1483. He ra. before 1-145 Janet Bouglas.( e ) She was living Aug. 1489, when her life rent was reserved. He was also living at that date, butiZ. before 6 Dec. 1494. III. 1490 ? 3. Alexander (Erskine), Lord Erskine [SJ, only s. and h. He was Gov. of Dumbarton Castle ; was P.C. to King James IV. IS.], with whom he was in great favour. He m. firstly, before 9 Oct. 1466, Christian, da. of Sir Robert Chkighton, of SaIKWJBAB. He m. secondly before 23 July 14S9, Helen, widow of Adam (Hemurn), 2d Loud Hales [SJ, 1st da. of Alexander (Home), 1st Loud HoMBfS.J, by his 1st wife, Mariota Landals. She was living 21 Nov. 1497. He was living 29 Jan. 1506/7, but d. before 17 June 1510. IV. 1510 ? £. Robert (Erskine), Loud Erskine [S.], 1st s. and li. He m. (mar. charter 1485) Isabel, 1st da. of Sir George Campbell, of Loudoun, by his 1st wife, who was said to be a da. of Gilbert (Kennedy), 1st Loud Kennedy [S.] She was living 8 June 1510. He d. 9 Sep. 1513, being slain at the battle of Flodden. V. 1513. 5. Joiin (Erskine), Lord Erskine [S.], 2d but 1st surv. s. and h., was on an embassy to France in 1515 ; appointed Gov. of the young King James V. [S.J and Constable of Stirling Castle, which last office was confirmed to him and his heirs 15 May 1525 ; Ambassador to France, 1535, to treat of the King's marriage, which took place 1537 ; one of the extra Lords of Session, 15 Feb. 1539 ; was present at the King's death, 16 Dec. 1542: was one of the guardians of the person of the Queen Regent whom, in 1548, he escorted to Fiance ; was Keeper of Edinburgh Castle, See. He m. Margaret, da. of Archibald (Camtbell), 2d Earl of Aiuiyll [S.], by Elizabeth, da. of John (Stewabt), 1st Earl of Lennox [S.] He d. 1552. (") There appears to be no record of the creation of the Barony of Erskine [S.] The late Lyon King (Burnett) wrote (4 Nov. [1885 ?]) " I am inclined to think the title of Lord Ersiine, always used by the Earls of Mar, belongs of right to the heir general, not to Lord Mar and Kellie J the proof one way or another is probably iu the Mar charter chest to which I have not access. ( b ) See " Earldom of Mar restitution" bill 1SS5 ; in which it is, also, stated that during the interval between the death (1407) of the Countess Isabella and the year 1565 " the succession and inheritance to the said Earldom was treated by successive Kings of Scotland as if the same had been by some means extinguished."
