[1832-52), by Dora, 2d da. of George Best, of Chihton Tark, Kent; was b. 13 Aug. 1S17, at Lenham, Kent; ed. at Caius Coll., Cambridge; B.A. (senior opt.), 1340; M.A., 1815; Barrister (Line. Inn), 1846; Queen's Counsel and Bencher, 1S60; M.P. for Hel3ton, 1866-68 ; Solicitor Gen., Feb. to Sep. 1S68, being then knighted ; one of the Justices of the Common Pleas, 1868-75, and of the High Court of Justice, 1875-76 ; one of the Lords Justices of Appeal, 1876-83 ; P.C, 1870 ; Master of the Rolls, 1883, being two years afterwards raited to the Peerage as above stated. He m. 3 April 1850, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Eugenie, da. of Louis Mayer, step da. of Col. GuitwooD, CB. ESK i.e„ "Graham of Esk," Barony [S.] (Graham), cr. 1681 with the Viscotjntcy of Preston [3.1 which see ; both ex. 1739. In 1688 or 1689 Richard (Graham), Viscount Preston and Lord Graham of Esk [S.] is said to have been cr. a Peer of England by King James II under the title of BARON ESK.( a ) He claimed his seat iu the House of Lords 11 Nov. 1689, stating that the patent had passed the seals before the vote declaring the King's abdication. The house, however, declared the patent null and void. He was executed for high treason 22 Dec. 1695, and attainted, whereby this Kmjliah peerage, even if it had been allowed valid, would be /or/cited.
