(*) XVI. 1540. Tiiomas (Cromwell), Baron Cromwell, the well-known Vicar General of the King, was, on IT April 1640, or. EARL OF ESSEX. He was attainted two months later, 29 June 1540, whereby all his honour! were forfeited. He was executed 28 July following. See fuller particulars under "Cromwell," Barony, cr. 1536. XVII. 1543 William (Parr), Baron Parr (so cr. 1539) having to mi. in Feb. 1576/7, Ann, only da. of Henry (BOUBORISB), Earl Of 1553. Essex abovenamed, w hich Lady became, in 153!)/40,<ho/m)-c Baroness Boi'RcniKH, was, 23 Dec. 1543, cr. EAUL OF ESSEX, " with the same place anil voice in Pari, as [was held by his father in law] Henry Bucher,lateEarl of Essex."( b ) This creation is more remarkable inasmuch as early thatsame year he hail repudiated hla said wifeand obtained an act of Pari. 17 April 1543, declaring her children bastards. He was cr. 16 Feb. 1546/7, MARQUESS OF NORTHAMPTON ; was attainted in 1553, whereby the Earldom of Essex and all his other honours were forfeited, tho' on 13 Jany. 1668/9, he was restored as Ua'qutU of Northampton. Viscount Hereford [1550], Loud Ferrers [1299], and Lord Bourcuier [1342], s. and h. of Sir Richard Devereux, by Dorothy, da. of George (Hastings), Earl op Huntingdon, which Richard was 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. ap. of Walter, 1st Viscount Hereford, &c, hut d. v.p. 13 Oct. 1547, was b. 16 Sep. 1541, ( c ) at Carmarthen Castle ; sue. his grandfather in the family estates and as Viscount Hereford and Lord Ferrers 27 Sep. 1558, and sue. his cousin, as Lord Bourchier, 28 Jany. 1570/1 ; joint custodian of the Queen of Scots, 1568 ; Lord Lieut, of co. Stafford, 1569 ; Marshal of the army in the north, 1569 ; K.G., 23 April 1573, and having been one of the few Peers of the old blood who, during the conspiracy of the Duke of Norfolk, had been faithful throughout to the Queen, obtained from her in 1571 the manor of Marks Hall, Essex (on the death of the Marquess of Northampton sometime Earl of Essex) and was, 4 May 1572, cr. EARL OF ESSEX( d ) He was, 9 July 1573, made Capt. Gen. and Gov. of Ulster, and, as such, conducted a colony thither, being made Earl Marshal of Ireland, 9 May 1576. He IB., between 1560 and 1565, Lettice, sister of William, 1st Earl of Banburt, 1st da. of Sir Francis Knollts, K.G., by Catharine, da. of William Cary, and Mary, his wife, sister to Anne Boleyn, the Queen Consort. The Earl d. (not without suspicion of poison) 22 Sep. 1576, aged 35, at Dublin Castle and was bur. at Carmarthen. Will, in which he styles himself "Earl of Essex aud Eivc,{ c ) and Erie Marshall of Ireland, Viscount ( a ) See vol. i, p. 394, note " a," sub " Bourchier," and see also this vol. sub " Eu." ( d ) His grandfather, the 1st Viscount Hereford, was s. and h. of John (Devereux), Lord Ferrers, by Cicely, sister (whose issue became heir) of Henry (Bourchier), Earl of Essex. An elaborate account of his investiture (together with that of Edward, Lord Clinton, then cr. Earl of Lincoln), is in Milles' Catalogue of Honour," p. 38. (°) With respect to his being Earl of Ewe .{i.e., Count of Eu, in Normandy], that title was so persistently used with the (Devereux) Earldom of Essex that it has been suggested it was a creation (therewith) in 1572. Such, however, is not the case, the patent roll having been carefully examined. The Earldom of Eu was indeed still m existenco (not becoming extinct till 1637) but it belonged to the Earls of Bath (of Bourchier family) the heirs male of the body of the grantee of 1419.
