He became a monk and d. 12 July 1139, being bur, at Foucarmont Abbey. FV. 1139. John, Count of Eu, feudal Lord of Hastings, &c, a. and h., who espoused the side of his uncle, King Stephen, whereby the honour of Tic-kill fell into hands of the Empress Maud and was never restored to him, nor, till 1214, to his descendants. He m. Alice, da. of William (Aniixi), Eahl of Arundel, by Adeliza, the Queen Dowager of Eng- land. With her consent ho became a monk and d. 1170, being bur. in Foucarmont Abbey. His widow is said to have m. A lured de St. Martin. She survived her son Henry (who (/. in 11S3) but d. before 1201. V. 1170. Henry, Count of Eu, feudal Lord of Hastings, &c, ». and heir, under age iu 1170. He M., about 1179, Matilda, widow of Osbert de Pheaux, da. of Hamelin Pi.antaoenet, jure itxoris Earl Wauknnk. He d. 1188 and was Inn: in Foucarmont Abbey. His widow (some- times called Matilda DH Longveville) d. 1207. VI. 11 S3. Ralph, Count of Eu, feudal Lord of Hastings, &c, h. and h. Ho d. a minor of the ago of about six, 11SG, when his estates in England and Normandy as also the Honour of Eu passed to his only sister, as below. VII. 11SG Alice, sister and h., a mere child in 1180, at her to brother's death. She m. at an early age, Ralph (de Lusignan), 1217. SBIOKBOB de Issoudon in Poitou,( a J who in her right, before 16 Oct. 1197, was known as Count of Eu. The lauds of the honour of Eu had, however, been, as early as 1201,( b ) wrested from him by King John, and in July 1204, the whole of Normandy was lost to England. King John, however, guaranteed to the Count, the value of the Norman hinds till their restoration, as also all such lands as his wife ever possessed or was entitled to in England, whereby the possession of the rape of Hastings and the right to the honour of Tickill (of which the possession was recovered in 1214) accrued to him.(°) The Count fought in the English ranks, 27 July 1214. He d. at his castle of Mello, in Poitou, early in May 1219, ami was bur. in Foucarmont Abbey. The widowed Countess obtained, a few mouths later, from the King of France, restitution of the County of Eu, which honour was transmitted to her posterity. She finally left England iu 1225 and d. 11 Sep. 1247, when her English estates (the rape of Hastings, the honour of Tickill, &e.), devolved on the Crown, in consequence of her S. and h., Ralph, Count of Eu,( J ) being an alien and incapable, of inheriting them,(°) (•) This Ralph was 2d s. of "Hugh IX, de Lusignan, by Matilda, Countess of La Mnrehc and Angouleme," being "a Cadet of one of those semi-royal families, who were connected by marriage with the Kings of England and France." Seep. 290, note " b." ( b ) King John, on a false report of the death of this Alice, directed, 1 April 1202, that her uncle, John of Eu, should be acknowledged as the heir of the County. This John, who was living 15 April 1207, was the last male descendant of the Counts of Euof thisline. ( c ) The honour of Tickill had only for a short time (1139-41) been iu the actual possession of any Count of Eu. A pedigree of the family of Busli, whose heiress m. the Count of Eu, shewing the descent therefrom of Idonia de Busli (wife of Robert de Vipout) the claimant (1214-22) and an account of the law suit is in Chester Waters' " Counts of Eu." Mary his da. and h., became Count of Eu, ivs did their son, grandson, great grandson, and great great grandson, which last (Ralph, Count of Guisnes and Eu, Constable of France), was beheaded 19 Nov. 1350, when all his dignities were confiscated, Guinea being reunited to the Crown while Eu was conferred on John of Artois.
