He was b. 1530 ; was Warden of the Middle Marches, temp. lid- YL, Mary and Eliz. aud was Capt. of Berwick Castle ; was one of the Com- missioners to negotiate with Scotland in 1587. He was contracted in marriage (at his age of 11, the lady being but 4), at Eynsham, Oxon, in 1541, to Mary, da. of George (Darcy), LotiD Daucy, by Dorothy, da. and h. of Sir John Metton, of Astou, co. York. This contract was however set aside, by decree at Durham, 3 Nov. 1554. He then m. before 1558, Margaret, da. of Sir Edward Dymoke, of Scrivelsby, co. Lincoln, Knight Banneret, by Anne, da. of Sir George Talboys. She was bur. 15 Sep. 1591, at Iugleby, co. Lincoln. He d. 12 and was bur. there 13 Feb. 1593/4. He m. firstly, about 1580, Mary, da. of Sir John Dawxay, of Sesay, co. York, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir Marmaduke TunstaLL. She d. 16 March 1612, and was bur. at Ludlow. M.I. He mi. secondly Elizabeth, Dow. Baroness Hunsdox, 2d da. of Sir John SrENCKR, of Althorp, co. Northampton, by Catharine, da. of Sir Thomas Kitson. He <!■ 1 April 1617, and was bur. at Ludlow. Inq. post mortem at Malton, his will (without date) being pr. 7 April 1617.( b ) His widow was bur. 2 March 1617/8 (with her first husband) in Westm. Abbey. He m. jure Earls of Eu, over cared to assume the Earldom, it was persistently usurped by the Earls of Essex, who hud no right whatever to the title." From Chester Waters' " Counts of Eu." ("J "The patent of nobility was not ourolle.l, but, about 1S30, it was in the possession of Michael Jones, Esq., a decendant of Michael Johnson and Mary Eure, [da. and h. of William, s. of Sir William Eure, the br. of Ralph, 3d Baron,] and after his death [Ins was living 1S32], was sold among his books aud MSS." See additional pedigree (p. 613), to Foster's " The Visitation of Yorkshire, 1584/5, &c., which contains a good account of this family. With respect to this patent it is stated in 'Creations, 14S3— 1646," in ap. 47th Rep. D. K. Pub. Records, that "No mention of this has been found in the calendar to the Rat. Rolls, nor has any Privy Seal or signed bill (Chancery Series) been found relating to it," tho' Sir William was sum. to Pari, by writ, 1 Dec. 1544. The authority for the Barony couferred in 1541 is, by Diigdalo, given as "Ex antes?, penes Georgium Eure, an 1562" [i.e., 1662], ami it seems clear from the devolution of the Barony that it was granted by patent to heirs male of the body of the grantee. ('■) In 1619 he sold tho estate of Inglcby (long the inheritance of his family) to Sir David Foulis.
