York ; was in command of a Reg. of Foot in the Low Countries ; knighted by the Earl of Essex before Rouen ; was employed in frequent missions to King James VI. [S.] to whom, on his accession as James L [E.] he was one of the first Englishman to swear fealty ; was a member of the Council o£ the north, and wag by pat, dat. at Whitehall, IS Oct. 1627, cr. Ferdinando (Fairfax), Loud Fairfax op Cameron [S.], 1st s. and h., b. 23 March 1584, at Denton afsd. and bap. there ; appears to have been knighted about 1007 ; M.P. for Boroughbridge, 1610 ; for Yorkshire, 1611-18: Gen. of the northern forces for the Pari., 1642-45,(e) and, as such, being in high command obtained several times a success over the Royalist party ;.(«) Gov. of York, 1611-18. He m. firstly, in 1607, Mary, da. of Edmund (Sheffield), 1st Earl of Motcrave, by his first wife, Ursula, da. of Sir Robert TinwiiiT. She d. in childbed at .Steeton and was bur. i June 1619, at Bolton Percy, co. York. He m. secondly, 16 Oct. 1616, at St. Gile3 in the fields, Midx., Rhoda, widow of Thomas HussKY, da. and h. of Thomas Chapman, of Londtn. He d. (from an accident) 11 March 1617/8, at Denton, and was bur. at Bolton Percy. M.I. Will dat. 12 March 1647/8, pr. 11 Oct, 1649. His widow was bur. 11 Oct. 16S6, at Ayuhoe, co. Northampton, in her 70th year. III. 1618. 3. Thomas (Fairfax), Lord Fairfax of Cameron [S.], s. and b. by 1st wife, b. 17 Jan. 1612, at Denton afsd. ; matric.at Cambridge (St. John's Coll*.) 1626, was knighted at York, 28 Jan. 1640/1, by the King, against whom, however, he took an active part. He with his father, shared the Pari, victory at Selby, 10 April 1644 and afterwards at Marston moor. He was, 21 Jan. 1644/5, appointed Commander in Chief of the army of the Pari., defeating the King, 14 June 1645 (at Naseby), and Lord Goring (at Langport), 10 July following, taking Bridgwater, Bristol, Dartmouth, Exeter, Oxford, &c. ; Constable of the Tower of London, 1646 ; besieged and reduced Colchester, June to Aug. 164S, but took no («) This Thomas wa3 1st surv. s. and h. of Sir William Fairfax, of Steeton, co. York, by Isabella, da. of John Th waits, of Denton afsd., winch last estate he inherited, while the paternal property of Steeton devolved (after the death of his said father 31 Oct. 1557), on his yr. br. CO It is so given in the appendix to Wood's "Douglas," tho' in the body of the work it is given as "Baron Fairfax of Cameron," possibly the correct form is "Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron."
