He <f. 25 Dec. 1717, aged 67, when the two titles of " Ferrers " separated, ( c ) the Barony (a Barony in fee) going to his grandaughter and heir general, while the Earldom devolved on bis second son, the heir male, as under. (by his first wife) of the last Lord, but d. v.p. 25 Feb. 1698 (before his father's elevation to the Earldom) aged 25. He was b. 28 Dec. 1692, at Staunton Harold, and lap. there 9 Jan. 1692/3 ; was M.P. for Leicestershire, 1713-11, but d. of the small pox (before his grandfather) unm.( c ) 5 and was bur. 21 July 1714, at Staunton Harold, co. Washington (Shirley), Earl Ferrers and Vis- count Tamworth, 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. male (tho' not h. general) of the 1st Earl, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, da. and h. of Laurence Washington, of Garesden, Wilts. He was b. 22 June 1677, at Staunton afsd. ; matric. at Oxford (Trin. Coll.), 2 Nov. 1693; Ensign in the Coldstream Guards, 1701 ; was M.P. for Fore [I.], 1713-15; was styled Viscount TamwcrtH, 1711-17. He, on Mb father's death The coheirs to these Baronies were (1) his nephew, Marmion Edward Ferrers, of Baddeslcy Clinton, co. Warwick, s. and h. of Edxard F. of the same by Harriet, Anne (who d. 1 June 1845), sister of the deceased (2) Elizabeth Margaret, yst. sister of the deceased who had m. 5 Aug. 1815, Joseph Moore Boultbee, of Springfield Park, co. Warwick, and who d. 24 May 1860, leaving issue. (t>) It is to be observed that the Tamworth estates (as to -which, see p. 333, note "I,") ncrcr belonged to him or to any (future) Viscount Tamworth. They were the inheritance of the wife of his eldest son and h. ap. and passed to their issue, being inherited by their da. and ii. Elizabeth, svo jure Baroness de Ferrers and by her issue the succeeding LordB de Ferrers of the family of Townshend, &c. ( c ) See [ante) p. 333, note "e." ( d ) This appears to have been but the second occasion when a courtesy title of peerage was used by the grandson and heir ap. of a Duke, MarqueBS or Earl. The previous one was that of the Marquessate of Tavistock, used (1694 — 1700), by the grandson and h. ap. of the Duke of Bedford. See Life of Lord Eldon, vol. ii, p. 236. (°) His death is the subject of a funeral poem by Elkanah Settle, called " Hvnori sacellvm."
