John Christopher Burton (Dawnay), Viscount Downe, [I.], to which jieerage he had sue. on the death of His father, the 4th Viscount, 21 Dec, 1780, was cr. 9 June 1796, BARON DAWNAY OF COWICK, co. York. He d. s.p. 18 Feb. 1832 when the Barony of Downay became extinct. See fuller particulars under " Downe" Viscountcy [I.], cr. 1680. of limitation whatever. Of all these Baronies, but two endured to the 17th century, early in which, in 1606, that of Mountjoy became extinct, while that of Stourton (alone), is still (1890) existing. His claim, as heir ycncral, to any heritable Barony so created would, at his death, devolve on his nephew and heir John (liourchier) 2nd Earl of Bath, aged 30 in 1548, whose mother Cecily (called " Florence " in the inquisition on her brother's death) was sister of this Henry (Daubeney), Earl'of Bridgewater. There was, accord- ing to some accounts, another sister, Anne, first wife of Alexander Buller of Lillesdon, co. Somerset, but it is presumed she had d. s.p. before 1548. Barony. I. 1796, to 1832.
