He appears to have rendered great services to the King and it is not improbable that the territorial Earldom became for the first time hereditary to him and his heirs. He d. 1139. IV. 1139. 2. Duncan [Macduff?] Earl of Fife [S.], s. and h., Justiciary of Scotland ; one of the nobles who in 1 174, agreed to the convention at Falaiee with Henry II, King of England. Malcolm [Macduff?], Earl of Fife [8.], nephew and h., being s. and h. of Duncan, br. of the last Earl, by Alice, da. of Walter Corbet, of Makerstoun. He was one of the guarantees of a treaty with the English in 1237 and 12-14 ; was one of the guardians of the Realm [S.], 20 Sep. 1255. Hero. Helen, da. of Llewellyn, Prince of Wales. He d. 1266. His widow m. (as his first wife) Donald, Earl of Mar [S.], who d. 1291. VIII. 1266. 6. Colbran [Macduff?], Earl of Fife [S.1 s. and h.( c ) He had been knighted by King Alexander III. [S.], in 1261. Duncan [Macduff?], Earl of Fife [S.], s. and h., aged 3 years at his father's death in 1270 ; admitted to the possession of his Earldom in 1281; was chosen, 11 April 1286, one of tho six Regents of the Kingdom [S.] He m. Johanna, da. of Gilbert (de Clark), Earl ok Gloucester ( d ) 1262-95, by his first wife. He was murdered 25 Sep. 1283, at Petpollock. His widow m. Sir Gervase Avbnbl and was living 1323-21.0 1 ) X. 1288. 8. Duncan [Macduff?], Earl of Fife [S.], only s. and h., aged 3 years at his father's death in 1288. He inclined at first to the English Bide, afterwards to that of Robert Bruce, signing the letter to the Pope, 6 April 1320, as to the independency of Scotland, but being taken prisoner at Dupplin, 12 Aug. 1332, he submitted to Edward Baliol and assisted at his coronation. (•) This is the first appearanco of the name of Macduff, Gillemichel is said to have descended from the traditional Macduff called Thane of Fife (tho' there never were such Thanes) by whom Macbeth was overthrown in 1057. (<>) The authority is "Sibbald," but it is questioned in Wood's " Douglas," on the ground of the improbability of Malcolm IV, who was 6. 1112, having a niece who was marriageable in 1160. ( c ) HiByr.br. " Macduff," played a conspicuous, tho' somewhat changing part in the English and Scotch wars, but fell (finally) on the side of Wallace, at Falkirk, 22 July 1298. (") Ex inform. Joseph Bain, F.S.A., [Scot.], who adds " this much is certain that the penultimate Earl Gilbert had a da. Johanna, Countess of Fife (who often appears in the Scoto-English records from 1305 to 1321) and that she was the mother of Duncan, last Earl of Fife. She m. a Becond husband, Sir Gervase Avenel, and all three are found together, exiles in England, circa 1321. It seems uncertain, who, her mother was. G. T. Clark, F.S. A, in Land of Morgan (Arch. Journal, 1880), states Alicia de la Marche, to be Earl Gilbert's first wife, who was divorced between May 1283 and 1285. Their only da. ho calls Isabel born (when her father was 19), 10 March 1262. The Earl's second wife fat, 1290] was Joan of Aore. He gave, circa 1281, to his da., Johanna, Countess of Fife, lands in Lincolnshire.
