Essex, aud EARL FITZ- WALTER; P.O., 1735; President of the Board of Trade, 1735-56 ; Treasurer of the Household, 1737-55 ; Lord Lieut, of Essex, 1741. He m. IS June, 1724, at St. James' Westm., Frederica, Dow. Countess of Holdkunkss, da. and coheir of Meinhardt (Schosiberi;), 3d Dukb of Schombero, by Charlotte, da. of Charles Louis, ELECTOR Palatine. She (/. 7 Aug. 1751, aged 63 and was bur. at Chelmsford, Essex. M.I. He rf. s.p.s., 29 Feb. If MM aged 86, in London, and was bur. at Chelmsford. SLL( B ) Will pr. 1756. On his death the Earldom of Fitz- Walter, together with the I'iscouulcy of Harwich, became cxtincl,{' 1 ) but the ancient Barony of Pits- Walter fell iuto abcyanee.{') ( a ) On 8 March 1669/70, it was reported to the House, that " he claimed precedence of all Barons now sitting as Barons, particularly of the Lord Abergavenny, aud alleged a determination in Henry VIH's time whereby he [sic] was placed next below the Lord Clifford." Objection was made to this claim by (the Duke of Norfolk, as) Lord Mowbray, by (the Earl of Northumberland, as) Lord Percy, by Lord Abergavenny (by proxy, he being then under age), by Lord Audlcy, and by Lord Berkeley. The writ of 23 Ed. I. [1 295] aud other subsequent ones were set forth by Lord Fitz Walter, who, however, acquiesced (salvo jure) in the placing assigned him. ( b ) According to Horace Walpole, he, in 1755, " was an old Beau." (°) In the inscription on his monument it is stated that " he inherited the Baronies of Fitz Walter, Egremond, Botitoffc [i.e. Botetourt] aud Burenclls, &c. As to the three last named ! ironies (to which he had no right), Bee under their respective headings. ( d ) He devised most of his estates to William Mildmay, a distant cousin, said to bo his heir male. ( e ) The representation devolved on the issue of Mary, aunt to the last Lord and only sister to Benjamin (Mildmay), Lord Fitz-Walter, who established his claim iu 1670. She m. her distant cousin, Henry Mildmay, of Graces in Little Baddow, co. Essex, by whom she had five daughters and coheirs, of three of whom (Mrs. Goodwin, Mrs. Waterson aud Mrs. Townshend), the issue is proved to be extinct. As to the two others (1) Lucy m. Thomas Gardiner, by whom (besides issue proved to bo extinct) she had a da., Jemima who m. John Joseph (Surgeon) and had a da. Jemima, m. to Robert Duke, of Colchester, a woollen-draper who is asserted to have settled in America, and of whose issue Sir. Courthope states "no trace whatever has been discovered." (2) FranceB, m. Christopher Fowler, by whom Bhe had a s. and h. Edmund Fowler (who inherited the estate of Graces abovenamed, and) who d. 1751, leaving a da. and h., Fanny, who m. in 1765, Sir Brook Bridges, Bart., and d. 1825, leavinga s. and h. Sir Brook-William Bridges, 4th Bart., who d. 1829, and tfas sue. by Sir Brook-William Bridges, Bait. (cr. iu 1868, Baron Fitz-Walter of Woodham Walter), on whose claim to the Barony of Fitz-Walter (as such coheir aud probable solo heir) the committee for privileges resolved, 18 July 1811, that "on the death of Lord Fitz-Walter in 1756 the Barouy fell iuto abeyance between Dame Fanny Bridges Dame Lucy Bacon aud Jemima Duke, aud [that] the said Dame Lucy Bacon after-
