Aug. 1701 when he took the name of Aland after that of Fortcscuc; Barrister (Inner Temple), 1712 ; Bencher, 1714, and Header, 1716. M.P. for Midhurst, 1715-16. Solicitor Gen. to the Prince of Wales, 1714, and subsequently, 1715, to the King; a Baron of the Exchequer, 1717 ; a Justice of the King's Bench, 171S-27, and a Justice of the Common Pleas, 1728-46, resigning office in June 1716 and being thereupon er. He m. firstly, about 1700, Grace, sister (of the half blood) to Charles, 1st Earl Camden, da. of Sir John Piutt, Lord Ch. Justice of the King's Bench, by his first wife, Elizabeth, da. and coheir of the Rev. Henry GREGORY. He m. secondly, 29 Dec. 1721, Elizabeth, da. and coheir of Sir Robert Dormer, a Justice of the Common Pleas (1700-26), by Mary, da. and coheir of Sir Richard Blake. He d. (within a few months of his elevation "to the peerage) 19 Dec. 1746. Will dat. 29 Sep. 1746, pr. 1747.( c ) His widow, who was 6. 6 Sep. 1691, d. April 1748. Both bur. at Stapleford Abbots, Essex. II. 1716, 2. Dormer (Fortescue-Aland), Baron Fortescue op to CRETAN [1.], 3d but only surv. s. and h.,( d ) being the 1st s. by the 1781. second wife. He d. imm, 9 March 1781, in his 59th year, when the title became extinct. M.I. at Stapleford Abbots afsd. Will nr. March 1760. FORTH. Earldom [S.] Patrick Ruthven, General in the King's army, was, in T ir.io 1639, cr. LORD RUTHVEN OF ETTRICK [S.], and, on 27 March , ' 1642, EARL OF FORTH [S.] He was, on 27 May 1644, cr. EARL , OF BRENTFORD, co. Midx. He d. s.p.ra., 2 Feb. 1651, when all 1U ' 1J ' his honours became extinct. See fuller particulars under "Brent- ford " Earldom, cr. 1644 ; ex. 1651. (") It is somewhat curious that the creation of this liarouy should be but six weeks later than that of the Barony of Fortescue of Castle Hill [G.B.] ( h ) Credan is a headland on the east shore of Waterford harbour, and formed part of the estate of the Aland family. ( c ) " lie had the character of being well versed in Norman and Saxon literature. ■ This he fully maintained in the introductory remarks to his edition of the treatise of his illustrious ancestor, Sir John Fortescue, entitled 1 The Difference between an absolute and limited Monarchy,' which he published in 1714.
