He sue. his elder br. Thomas, in the family estates and as LOUD WEST, 30 Sep. 1415, being then aged 21 years ; was Knighted before HI 7 ; was in the wars with France ; Capt. of the Castle of St. Lo in Normandy, 141S ; Capt. of the Fort of La Motte, 1419; and, having sue. his maternal uncle iu the estate of Wick-wan-, co. Glouc , and other the entailed estates of the La Wan- family, was sum. to Pari, (as Loud La Warr) by writ, directed Rcjinaldo la Warn, Chl'r, 15 July (1427), S Hen. VI, and by other writs, some being directed Reginaldo West, Chl'r (Lord West), from that date to 23 Sep. (1149), 28 Hen. VL( a ) He purported and pro- ably performed a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1441 and 1447. He is generally said to have in. Eleanor, 1st da. of Henry (Percy), 3d Earl ok Northumberland, by Eleanor, da. and fa, of Richard Poynings, but other authorities say his wife was Margaret, da. of Robert Thorley. He d. 27 Aug. 1451( b ) and was bur. at Broadwater Sussex. VII. 1451. 7. Richard (West), Loud La Warr, or De La Warr and Lord West, s. and h., then aged 19. He was sum. to Pari, from 22nd Jany. (1455/6) to 19 Aug. (1472) 12 Ed. IV, by writs directed " Ric'o West, MHili," or "Rico West Cherl'r." He was a zealous Lancastrian and in consequence obtained leave to quit England from Ed. IV iu 1462 but soon returned. He m. Catharine, da. of Robert (Uungerkord), Loud Hi'nt.ehford, by Margaret, da. of William (Botreaux), Lord Botreaux. He d. 10 March 1475/6. VIII. 1476. S. Thomas (West), Lord La Warr, or De La Warr and Lord West, s. and h., who obtained livery of hislands attheageof 19 on 1 Sep. 1476, and who, 2 years previously, had served in the expedition to France. K.B. at the marriage of Richard, Duke of York, 18 Jany. 147S. He was sum. to Pari. (=) from 15 Nov. (14S2) to 15 April (1523) 14 Hen. VHL(») Espousing the cause of Henry VII he obtained from that King in 1486 large grants from the estates in Sussex of the attainted Duke of Norfolk, including the honour of Bramber, the forest of St. Leonards, the towns of Horsham, Shoreham, &c. He was in 1491 one of the commanders in Flanders ; in 1497 aided in suppressing the Cornish rebels ; in 1513 was at the sieges of Theroueue and Touruay ; being made a Knight Banneret at the battle of the Spurs, 16 Aug. 1513; attended the King's sister in 1514 at her marriage with Louis XII of France, &c. He was el. K.G. 23 April and inst. 11 May, 1510. He m> firstly Elizabeth, sister and h. of Sir John Mortimer, da. of Hugh Mortimer of Mortimers Hall, Hants. He m. secondly Eleanor, da. of Sir Roger Copley of Roughway, co. Sussex, by Jane, da. of Thomas (Hon), Baron Hoo and Hastings. He d. 11 Oct. 1525, and was bur. at Broadwater. Will dat. S Oct. 1524, pr. 12 Feb. 1525/6. The will of his widow as " Elynor Wat, Lady La War," dat. 5 May 1536, directing her burial to be at Broadwater, pr. 14 Nov. 1536. IX. 1525, 0. Thomas (West), Lord La Warr, or De La Warr to and Lord West, s. and h- by 1st wife. K.B. 29 Nov. 14S8 on the 1554, creation of the Prince (Arthur) of Wales. Capt. in the King's army in France, being dubbed Knight Banneret at Lisle, 14 Oct. 1513 ; Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex 1524-25. He subscribed in 1531 the declaration to Pope Clement VII urgiug the King's divorce, receiving. a few years later ( a ) There ia proof in the Rolls of Pari, of his sitting. CO His numerous manors in the counties of Leicester, Somerset, Dorset, Herts, Sussex, Hants, Wilts, Gloucester, Devon, Suffolk and Lincoln are set out by Dugdale. See " Collins " vol. v, p. 8. So also are those of his son the 7th Lord. (°) "The Writs of Summons were constantly addressed to the Lord la Warr from the 22 Ed. IV to the 1 Hen. VIII by the name of " Richardo West, Chevr,', " Ric'o West, Militi,"or "Richardo West de la Wane, Chevr"; but as it is certain that Richard West, Lord la Warr, died on the 10 March, 16 Ed. IV, 1476 (Esch. eod. ami.), it was clearly a mistake. Iu the 1 Hen. VIII the error was corrected, and from that year until the denth of Thomas, Lord la Wan-, he was summoned by his proper names."
