IS Aug. 1087, the Lady Mary Trnon, ille'git. da. of King Charles II, by Mary Daviks, a well known actress. He d. 29 April 1705, at his house, in Arlington street, Midx., and was iter. 10 May at Dilston. Will dat. 14 to 23 Apr. 1705, pr. 21 May following. His widow, who was ft. 16 Oct. 1673, being the 14th and yst. child of her Royal father, had from him a warrant of the precedency of the da. of an Earl, 10 I h e. 1 080 (with confirmation of the surname of Tudor) and had the precedency of the da. of a TJuke by a like warrant, 21 Feb. 1083/4. She m. in 1705, a few months after her husband's death, Henry G]UHAM(°), of Levens, M.P. for Westmorland, sometime Groom of the Bedchamber, who d. 7 Jany. 1700/7, at St. James', Westm. Within a few months of his death she m. thirdly 26 Aug. 1707, at Twickenham, Midx., James ROOKS. She d. at Paris 6 Nov. 1720. (") This is one of the few English peerages conferred by James II which (not reckoning titles of inferior rank granted in the same patent) were but ten in all. These are 1 Dukedom, i.e., Berwick {Filz-James) ; 1 Mnrqucssate, i.e., Powis {Herbert) ; 3 Earldoms, i.e., Dorchester (Sedley), Derwentwater (Fadclyffc), and Stafford {Howard) ; 4 Baronies, i.e., Dover {Jermyn), Churchill, Jeffreys, Waldegrave, and Griffin. Sec below sub " Dundee," as to Scotch Peerages conferred by that monarch ; and as to Irish Peerages so conferred see vol. iv, sub " Galway." ( b ) The Peerage writers have one and all (including even Mr. Doyle, in 1880), followed "Sandford" [p. 054], who states the name of this Peer to be (that of his father) Francis. His own will, the will of his father, and of his brother Francis, &c, clearly prove this to be an error, as apparently are the dates given by Sandford to the birtliB of the children of this Earl.
