Entering the navy at an early age the various battles in which he distinguished himself are a matter of history. He was knighted (as Capt. R.N.) 6 Nov. 1793 ; was second in command at the battle of the Nile, 1 Aug. 1790; was er. a Bahonet, 13 June 1S01 ; obtained a victory oil' Cadiz over the French and Spanish fleets, 1 July 1 SOI, for which he received the thanks of both houses ; was noin. K.B. 5 Sep. and inv. 17 Nov. 1801, inst. 19 Nov. 1803, becoming G.C.B. in 1815; Grand Cioss of the Swedish Order of the Sword ; Admiral of the Red ; Genera! of the Royal Marine force, Sec. ; a: D.C.L. of Oxford, 16 June 1814- In his 75th year he was, in 1S31 , raised to the Peerage as above stated. He m. 5 Oct. 1814, Mary, da.' of Vice Admiral Willi™ Lechmeue, of Steeple Aston, Oxon, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Dashwood-Kino. M Bart. She d. 12 May 1849 (a few weeks after her mother-in-law) at Cheltenham. He d. there s.p. 9 April 1863, in his 74th year. III. 1863. 3. John St. Vincent (Saumarez), Baron de Saumarez, br. and h., being 4th and yst. s. of the 1st Baron ; b. 28 May 1806, in Guernsey; ed. at Harrow and at the Royal Mil. Coll., Sandhurst; was in the Rifle brigade; became Col. in the Army 1S5 4, retiring 1855. He m. firstly, 2 July 183S, Caroline-Esther, 1st da. of William Rhodes, of KirkshiU and of Bratahope Hall, co. York. She d. 15 July 1S46. He m. secondly, 13 April IS50, Margaret Antoinette, 4th da. of William-Richard-Hopkins NOBTHEV, of Wing House, Bucks. Family Estates... These, in 1SS3, were under 2,000 acres. DESKFOKD. DESMOND.() ["The successive Lords( c ) of the House of Desmond, from 1199 to 1327, are only traced thro' the public rolls by the names of Thomas filing Mauricii, Johannes frfius Tliomce, Mauritius Alius Johannis, Thmnas filing Mauricii, and Mauritius Jilius Thomw ; and the successive Lords of Ophaley are at the same period simply called Mauritius Jilius Geraldi, Ocraldus filing Mauricii, Mauritius/dins Ocraldi, &c, without any addition.
