This alliance created Bitch displeasure that in 1118 he resigned his Earldom to his uncle, James, next beluw mentioned (who had expelled him frum his estates) on condition of his son(") obtaining " an Earl's son's portion of(M land." He d. at Rouen, in Normandy, 10 Aug. 1426, and was bur. in a convent of Friars Preachers at Paris. VII. 1418 ! 7. James Fitz-Gerald (Fitz-Gerald), Eaul; c ) of Des- mond [1.], uncle of the last Fail, whose Earldom he assumed under a resignation in 1118, but was not acknowledged therein till 1422, having so lately as 1420 been made (as "James, son of Gerald, late Earl of Desmond") Senechal of Imokilly, Iuchiquin, and Youghall. On 20 Aug. 1423, he was made Constable of Limerick for life. On 11 Aug. 1145. he was excused attendance at Pari. He m. Mary, da. of Ulick de BuRGO (Mae- William Fighter) or (according to Carew) da. of William Fitz-Riekard Bckuh. He d. at Mocollop 1402, and was bur. at Youghall iriary.(d) VIII. 14G2. 8. Tiiomas Fitz James (Fitz-Gerald), Earl of Des- mond [1.], s. and h. He was Loud Deputy of Ireland, 1462-07, to George, Duke of Clarence, and was founder of the College of Youghall, 27 Dec. 1464. Elizabeth, da. of John (Barky), 2d Viscount Buttevant or Baruymore [I.] He was found guilty of extorting " coyn and livery " by a Pari, held at Drogheda where he was beheaded ID Feb. 1407( c ) and bar. in St. Peter's Church, but subsequently removed to Christ Church, Dublin. ( r ) IX. 14G7. P. James Fitz-Thomas (Fitz-Gerald), Earl of Des- mond [I.], s. and h., who received considerable grants from the King. He m. Margaret, da. of Teigo 0'BniEN, of Thomond. He d. s.p.m. 7 Dec. 14S7, aged 28, being murdered " by the stroke of a bullet " at Rathkeale at the iustigation of his yr. br. Sir John of Desmond ; bur. at Youghall. X. 1487. JO. Maurice Fitz-Tiiomas (Fitz-Gerald), Earl of Desmond [I.] called " Bacearjh " or " of the Chariot " (from being generally so carried as being lame) and called also " Gavdvt" and " Jlcllicosus, br. and b. male. He was one of the 15 Irish Peers sum. by Henry VII in 14S9 to (') According to the pedigree in Hayman's " Unpublished Geraldiue documents " this Earl had two sons, viz (1) "Maurice, to whom the manors of Adare, Moyidlow, Kilcolmaji, and Eroghill were assigned by James, Earl of Desmond, the usurper of his title; slain by Connor O'Mulrian," and (2) "John (Claragh), slain by his uncle in 1 102." Of these sons the eldest, Maurice, had issue (1) "John, eldest son, who having killed a person at Adare fled to Scotland and was ancestor of the family of Adair in that Kingdom," and (2) '■ Maurice, Lord of the manors of Moyallow KUcolmnu, and BroghiU, whose descendant Raymond Fitz-Gerald, of Broghill, was executed for treason in the reign of Elizabeth." (") According to "Carew " there was a Maurice (Fitz-Gerald), 6th Earl of Desmond (yr. br. of the 5th and elder br. of the 7th Earls) who d. s.p. 1410, This, however, disagrees with the more reliable evidence which has been followed in the text. (") John (Tiptoft), Earl of Worcester, the Chief Governor, thro' whom this act was carried out, was himself executed 18 Oct. 1470, for this and other acts of injustice. The Btory runs that Elizabeth Widville, the Queen Consort, who was a bitter enemy to Desmond had procured (privately) a privy seal warrant for his arrest aud execution. (1 Sir Gerald Fitz-Thomas (Fitz-Gerald) called Gerald Ogc, his 5th son, slain in 1477 was ancestor of James, who but for the attainder would, apparently, in 16S7 have been entitled to the Earldom.
