James Fitz-Tiiomas (Fitz-Gerald), s. and h. as- sumed the title of Earl of Desmond [E.J when ho joined O'Neill rebelliou in 1598, taking command in Monster and was culled " TmSujaH {i.e., the Strain or Sham) Earl." He is said to have m. three titnes, viz. firstly, a da. of Theobald (Butler), Baron Caiier [L], secondly, a da. of John (Fower), Baron Le Power, and thirdly, Ellen, widow of Maurice Fitz-Gibbou, the s. and h. up. of the White Knight. She was, however, either dead or divorced before 1600, when his re-marriage was contemplated. He was attainted 10 .March 1000-1, and finally was taken prisoner 29 May 1601, and seut to Euglaud where he d. s.p.legit. in the Tower of London in 1003 or 1612. XVII. 100S, 17. John' Fitz-Tiiomas (Fitz Gerald), br. and h., m . who assumed the title of Earl or Desmond [I.] He had assisted his brother in his rebellion, but lied to Spain in 1003. He m. 1G12. [ — ], da. of Richard Comkhford of Daugenwore, co. Kilkenny. He was living in Spain in 1015. XVIII. 1615 I 18. Gerald Fitz John (Fitz Gerald), only s. and 0 h. He appears also to have assumed the title of Earl ok Desmond [1.], and served in the armies of the King of Spain and ltj'J2. the Emperor. He d. num. in 1632, in Germany, when the issue mule of James (9th Earl), Maurice (10th Earl}, Thomas (12th Earl), and John, the 4 eldest sous of Thomas, the 8th Earl, became extinct^), and any continuous usage of the title appears to have been abandoned( b ) XVII. 1G19 1. (his presumptive heir), who was destined by that all-powerful Court favourite, the Marquess of Bucking- 1G2S. bam to be married to that nobleman's nephew, the Hon. Kilkenny, and EARL OF DESMOND [I.] He d. s.p.m. 28 Oct 1628, when the peerages so conferred became extinct, the Scotch Barony of Dingwall descending to his da. and heir of line. Admon, 16 Dec 1628. His wife, who d. in Wales 18 days before him was bur. (possibly re-interred) at Westrn. Abbey (as "Countess of Desmond") 17 March 1628/9. XVIII. 1622, /. " Oeohge Feilding, Fsquire [second] sou of in reversion. William, Earl ok Dendiuh, and nephew of George, Marquess IQ-ia of Buckingham "( ll ) [his mother, Susan, being da. of Sir 2 '■ George VlLLIBRS and sister to the said Marquess, (afterwards it possession, p,,]^ 0 f Buckingham] was by the Court influence of his said (*) lu 1601, according to the relation of " the Sugan Earl " (placed iu the hands of Sir Georgo Carew), there were then, besides himself, but three such existing, viz (1) his own brother, John [his successor.], (2) "The Queen's Earl "[i.e., the Earl who d. s.p. 1601], and (3) Maurice, ouly surv. s: of John Oge, the yst. s. of Sir John of Desmond, the 4th s. of the 8th Earl. This Maurice d. s.p. ( b ) The male representative of the Earldom appears after 1632 to be iu the descen- dants of Gerald Oge. (slaiu 1477), 5th and yst. s. of the 8th Earl. The male issue of Gerald's eldest son, James FitzGerald of Macollop, existed iu 1663 ; and, in 1 6S7, James Fitzgerald (the great-great-grandson of Thomas Fitz-Gerald of Kilmaeow, who was i/ounjcsts. of the said Gerald Oge) appears to have been called Earl of Desmond. This James d. s.p.m in 1742 or 1743 at Grange, co. Waterford, being apparently the last male issue of the 8th Earl, and not improbably (the mats line of Fitz-Gerald of Decies having ended iu 1664) even of the 1st Earl. See p. 85, note "f." ( c ) No entry thereof is found iu the patent rolls. It is, however, alluded to in the patent of the creation of the Viseountcy of Callan [I.] 7 Nov 1622. It is to be noted that the wife of the grantee, Elizabeth, da. and h. of Thomas (Butler), Earl of Ossory and Ormonde [1.], was grand-daughter of James, also Earl of Ossory and Ormonde [I.], and Joan, his wife, da. and h. of James, 11th Earl of Desmond, [I.] who d. s.p.m. 1529.
