In 1306 he sue. to the Greystock estates (under a settlement made in 1299 by his cousin Lord Greystock uboveuamed) and under the name of Greystock and by that Baronial designation (only) his posterity (tho' not he himself or his son) was (within six years of his death) known. He was Warden and Joint Warden of the Sotch Marches temp. Ed. I. and Ed. II.; Gov. of Berwick and Gov. of Carlisle. His signature as " Jladus fil. III. 1315. 2. Robert (Fm- William), Loud Fitz- William, of Greystock, 2d but 1st surv. s. and h., aged 10 at his father's death with whom, in 1311, he had been in the Scotch wars. He inherited thoGreystock estates hut appears not to have assumed that name. He was never sum. to Pari. He m. Elizabeth, da. of Halph Nevii.i.. of Scotton, co. Lincoln. He (/. (1316-17), 10 Ed. II., and was bur. at Butterwick. His widow d. 25 Oct. (1346), 20 Ed. III. IV. 1317. J. Ralph (Fitz-Wjlliam afterwards de Greystock), Lord Fitz-William, s. and h., b. about 1299, being aged 17 at his father's death. Haviug assumed the surname of de Grci/stoch he was from 15 May (1321), 14 Ed. II., to 17 Sep. (1322), 16 Ed. I., 'quod ipse de manerio de Graystoke et tota Baronia de Graystoke,' &c, ' feoffare possit dilectum et fidelem nostrum Radulphum Filium WiUielmi nobiscum in obsequium nostrum ad partes trausmarinas prefecturum ;' a fine was levied [1298-99], 27 Ed. I., and the said manor settled upon John de Greystock for life, with remainder to the said Ralph and his heirs for ever. This settlement was made; not only to the exclusion of his own brother and sister (who afterwards died s.p.), but also to the exclusion of the two daughters and coheirs of his uncle, Thomas de Greystock, in whom was eventually vested the representation of the original [/cudal] Barony of Greystock." This, however, hardly expresses what really occurred, viz., that a person who was himself entitled to a Barony in fee changed his name (on inheriting a large estate from another family) and that in consequence thereof the dcsiyr.aiion of writ for his summons as a Baron
