Family Estates. — These, in 1883, consisted of 01,943 acres in Lanarkshire ; 25,380 in Roxburghshire ; 10,422 in Berwickshire ; 5,209 in Forfai shire ; 2,271 in Ayrshire, and 1,325 in Renfrewshire. Total, 100,550 acres, worth (exclusive of minerals, valued ai £5,916) £56,632 a year. Principal Residences. — The Hirsel, near Coldstream, co. Berwick ; Douglas Castle, and Bothwell Castle, both co. Lanark. AW. — These last named castles, and the vast estate in Lanarkshire were derived from the family of Douglas. The Earl of Home stands 25th in point of acreage among the 2S noblemen who, in 1SS3, possessed above 100,000 acres in the Uuited Kiugdom. See a list of these in vol. ii., p. 51, note "a," jmJ. This was never an English peevage, but was a Norman seigniory, conferred in 1418 on Sir Walter Hungerford, afterwards (1426) cr. Lord Hungerford. It was, however, assumed (with others) in 1485, as a peerage dignity bv Mary, suo jure Baroness Botreaux, &c, and has been even attributed to her heirs, the Marquesses of Hastings. See p. 186. note " b," sub. " Hastings de Hastings." HOO. Barony. Sir Thomas Hoo ( a ) of Hoo, in Luton, Beds ; Mulbarton, I. 1447 co. Norfolk, &e„ s. and h. of Sir Thomas Hoo, of the same, by his to first wife, Eleanor, da. and h. of Thomas Felton, of co. Huntingdon ; 1455. was b. before 1400 ; sue. his father 23 Aug. 1420 ; distinguished him- self greatly in the wars with France ; Keeper of the Seals in France, 1435 J Chancellor of France, 1436-39.
