He served in the French wars and was kni'ihted by Edward III. at the taking of Calais, 4 June 1317 ; was Justiciary of Ireland. 1858 and 1357; Lord Justice [I.]. 30 March 1360; Lord Dkpcty of Ireland ami Cuatos of the Realm, 22 March 1371, as atain 10 Feb. 1375, and in 1377. He m. at Calais, in 1317, Elizabeth, da. of Bartholomew (dk Buroiikrsh). Lord Bi'rshkhsu, by Elizabeth, da. and coheir of Theobald (de Vkrdon). Loud Vkhdox. He d. 25 Aug. 1390, and was bur. at Trinity (now Christ Church), Dublin. V. 1390. 5. Gerald Fitz Maurice (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare [t.]j s. and h. He was, from Sep. to Oct. 1405, Deputy to Thomas of Lancaster, afterwards Duke of Clarence (s. to King Henry IV.) the Viceroy [I.] He m. at her age of 14, before Dec. 1381, Margaret, da. and h. of Sir John RnciiFOUT. He enlarged the Castles of Maynooth( d ) and Kilkea and served against the rebels in Ireland in 1420. He m. He was. from 1454 to 1460, Deputy to Richard, Duke of York, the Viceroy [I.] ; was Lord Justice [I.], 1460-01 and 1468-75 ; Lord Chancellor [I.] 1463, for life ; was attainted (with his br. in law, the Karl of Desmond [I.], who was beheaded) in 1467 but was restored next year and re-appointed Lord Justice as afsd. ; Loud Deitty [I.J, 1 171 to 1475. He established the Irish Order of the "Brothers of St. George" to resist the Irish and English rebels.( f ) He m. Joan, da. of James (») Gerald, the eldest son, d. unm. and v. p. in 1303. ( d ) This, which for more than a century had been the principal residence of this family, was then "one of the largest and richest Earl's houses in Ireland." (') Sic in the "Earls of Kildare," hut Mr. E. If. Boyle, a good authority for the history of this family (who d. 11 Aug. 1S85), writes, "her surname is doubtful— JJelnherne or Rassctt. O'Clery says she was da. of a Butcher."
