[Ij j Capt. of a troop of horse ; Qov. of eo. Kildare and of King's county and Queen's county ami took his seat in Pari. [I.] 8 May 1661. He in., about 1655, Elizabeth (a fortune of £6,(100), 2d da. of John (HOLLES), 2d Eaulok Glare, by Elizabeth, da. and coheir of Horatio (de Verk), Baron Verb ok Ttliwry. He resided at Kilkea Castle and d. of fever 5 March 1004, aged 30, and was bur. the 6th. in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. A.lmon. 20 Feb. 1874/5. His widow 30 June 1060, at Kilkea Castle, and was bur. beside him. XVIII. 1664. IS. John (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare, &<:. [I.], only s. and h., b. 1661, being but three years old when he .inc. to the peerage [I.] He was a: D.C.L. of Oxford, 22 May 1083, and resided chiefly in England. He m. firstly Mary, 1st da. of Henry O'ISrikn, slijlid Loud O'Brien (s. and h. ap. of Henry, 7th Earl OF Tuo.mond [I.] by Catharine, sister and h. of Charles (Stuaiit), 6th Duke of Lennox [S.] She, who was 4. 7 and bap. 11 May 1662, at tst. Martins in the fields, d. 24, and was bur. 28 Nov. 1683, in Westm. Abbey. He m. secondly, 12 June 1GS4 (Lie. Vic. Gen.) at Lord Burlington's chapel, St. -Martins in the fields, Elizabeth (a fortune of £10,000), da. and coheir of Richard (.Lines), 1st Earl ok Hanelaou [I.], by Elizabeth, da. and coheir of Francis (Willouchuy), 5th Baro.v Willodohby or PaBBAU. He d. s.p.s. in his 48th year 9 Nov. and was buy. 4 Dec. 1707, in Westm. Abbey. Will dat. 19 March 1704 5, to 5 April 1707, pr. 20 Feb. 1707, S. His widow <(. 10 and was bur. 22 April 175S, aged 93, at Westm. Abbey. Will dat. 3 Oct. 1748, to 27 June 1757, pr. 12 April 1753. [Henry Fitz Gerald, styled Lord Offaly, s. and h. ap. by first wife. He d. in the 7th month of his age, 18 and was but: 21 Feb. lOSS/i.C') at Westm. Abbey.] XIX. 1707. l'J. Robert (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare, &c. [LJ, cousin and b, male, being 3d but 1st surv. s. and h. of the Son. Robert Fitz Gerald, by Mary, da. and b. of Col. James Clotwohthy, of Monuimore, co. Londonderry, which Kobert last named was br. of Wentworth, the 17th Earl, and d. 31 Jan. 1697", aged 60. He was A. 4 May 1675, and sue. to the Earldom [I.J, 4 Dec. 1707, taking his seat, 5 May 1709 ; P.O. [I.], 1710, 1714, and 1727, being one of the Lords Justices . 1714. He re-purchased for £8,000 in Jan. 1738/9 the lease of Carton (granted by the 14th Ear] in the 17th century) and made that place his chief residence. He is said " to have been one of the most pious noblemen of the age."( ( *) He >«. 7 March 1708/9, Mary, 1st da. of William (O'Brien), 3d Earl of Inchiquin [I.], by Mary, da. of Sir Edward Viiiiehs. He d. at Carton 20 and was bur. 27 Feb. 1743/4, in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, aged 68. Will dat. 19 Feb. 1743, pr. in Dublin. His widow, who was b. in London 12 Feb. 1691/2, and who was Goddaughter to Queen Mary II., d. Feb. 1780, aged 88, and was bur. with her husband. [William Fitz Gerald, t&yled Lord Offaly, 1st s. and li. ap., b. 24 July 1714, d. an infant.] [George Fitz Gerald, styled Lord Offaly, 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. ap„ b. 11 Oct. 1720, d. an infant.] (a) The title of "Qffilly n had been confirmed 29 July 1620 to Lettice Digby for life with rem. to the Earls of Kildare. She rf. 1 Dec. 1658, and it seems doubtful whether these Earls were entitled to that dignity (notwithstanding its restoration in 1554 to the 1 1th Earl) between 1020 and 1058.
