He m. secondly, Eleanor, widow of John Nangle, of Navan, da. and h. of Sir Thomas [or Henry] Dowdall, of Newtown and Termonfeighan. He d. 21 Sep. 1532, and was bur. at Strathmullen. He m. secondly, before 1584, Catharine, da. of Sir Thomas Fitz William, of Meryon, co. Dublin, by Genet, da. of Patrick Fixglass, Ch. He m. (when a minor) • ^ Margaret, da. of Nicholas (St. Lawrence), Lord Howth [I.], by his second wife, Mary, da. of Sir Nicholas Wuytk. He d. 14 March 1630. Will dat. 2 Nov. 1629,( b ) directing his burial to be in the chapel of Gormaustou at Strathmullen. His widow m. (as his 4th wife) Luke (Plunkett), 1st Earl of Fingali. [I.], who d. 29 March 1637, aged 48. She d. 16 Nov. 1637, at Dublin, and was bur. at Strathmullen afsd. 40 years previously by the creation (in 1440) of Viscount Beaumont. It is stated in Selden's " Titles of UoJiour," that this was a dignity conferred on one " that had three or four Baronies on every of which ten gentlemen at the least were depending." Gormawston was thejtrd Irish Viscountcy cr. by patent. Two prescriptive Visoouutcies [L], viz., Buttevant (or Barrymore) and Fermoy were ranked before it, temp. Hen. VII., but, of these, Fermoy, since 1733, and Buttevant, since 1823, became either dormant or extinct. ( a ) The preamble to the patent is given iu " Lodge," vol. iii, p. 76, where (sub "Ludlow " Earldom) is an account of this family. • (b) In it he gives several rings, worth 40s. each, with this motto " Remember Gor- mansion" and directs divers pictures to be placed near his " statue " in his chapel with these words under them "Pray for Gormanston."
