( a ) It appears (N. it- Q. 2d s. x. p. 99), that this title was taken in memory of the estate of Gosford in East Lothian, which for about 65 years was possessed by a branch of the family of Acheson seated at Prestonpaus in that county. This is more remarkable inasmuch as " the Scottish estate had been parted with a century and a half before [the grantee was thus ennobled] and had never been in the possession of his lineal progenitors."
